Gilmore Girls: 10 Behind The Scenes Tidbits That’ll Make You Want To Rewatch

The mother-daughter relationship of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore took center stage in the US sitcom, Gilmore Girls. Starring Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham, the show crept into viewer’s hearts, after making its debut in 2000. The characters’ story unfolded in Stars Hollow, Connecticut, and through a series of 153 episodes, audiences came to know the characters well – at times surprised by developments in the characters’ individual stories.

The series had cross-generational appeal and managed to remain edgy while retaining its homely attraction. Still, there are some interesting behind-the-scenes facts that could mobilize ardent fans to do a retake of the show.

10 Hispanic Roots

Viewers might not be aware that Alexis Bledel, who played Rory Gilmore, is in fact Hispanic. She speaks fluent Spanish, and only started to learn English when she went to school.

In the show, she is shown using basic Spanish phrases in an exchange with Esperanza. These scenes came easily for Alexis, with Spanish being her mother tongue.

9 Dinner To Die For

How many times did fans get to watch Lorelai and Rory enjoying Friday night dinners at Emily and Richard’s House? The meals served at the dinner table looked absolutely delicious.

However, according to Lauren, they tasted pretty awful! This should come as a surprise to viewers, as smiles and gestures of gratitude usually accompanied the meal times. The meals really appeared to be five-star wonders.

8 Another Cup Of Coffee?

It would seem that Lorelai and Rory drink cup after cup of coffee. In many scenes of the series, they are shown holding coffee mugs. Other times, they are carrying takeaway cups of coffee.

Behind the scenes, however, Alexis detests coffee, so much so she never actually had one sip of coffee while shooting Gilmore Girls. When she was shown drinking coffee on the show, there was actually Coca-Cola in her mug.

7 Side-By-Side

Gilmore Girls was Alexis Bledel’s first acting stint. Before this, she was strictly a model. As such, she was unfamiliar with the ways of acting and was not used to being behind a camera that actually moved. Lauren had to direct her with this and help her to stand in the right way, and in the right position, for the camera.

This is why she is often seen linking arms with Rory, and with her arms around her shoulders. It’s more than just an onscreen mother-daughter thing. It’s a ‘stand in the right position, at the right time’ thing.

6 Fast Talkers

The script of Gilmore Girls was much longer than your average TV show script. At times, this meant the actors and actresses needed to talk a little faster than usual.

This sometimes meant employing the services of a dialogue coach so that cast members could get their word pacing right. The show’s tagline, ‘Life’s short. Talk fast.’, seems quite fitting then. As it turns out, Lorelai Gilmore was the fastest talker of them all!

5 More Than Just Onscreen Romance

Sparks flew between Jess and Rory, Milo Ventimiglia and Alexis Bledel, on the show. However, the romance between the two wasn’t mere acting.

Fans will probably do a re-watch of the onscreen romance after learning that the couple wasn’t just an item on the screen but dated off-screen as well. Milo and Alexis were together for three years so viewers weren’t imagining a genuine attraction between Rory and Jess.

4 Set Surprises

How things appear isn’t always how they are. This was true of the set of Gilmore Girls. It might be hard to believe but the exterior of Lorelai’s home and the exterior of Sookie’s house were connected.

Sookie’s house, as captured by the camera for the series, was actually the back of the Gilmore home. This meant Sookie’s backyard was actually Lorelai’s front yard if one wants to get technical about it.

3 Among The Daisies

In the final episode of Season 1, Max Medina showers Lorelai with many, many yellow daisies, asking her to marry him. In the show, 1 000 daisies are given, however, in reality, many, many more daisies were used on set.

Next time one watches the scene, it might be interesting to do a quick daisy count. The multi-flower scene is definitely impressive and Lorelai among the flowers was a floral artwork, which fans won’t easily forget. The yellow daisy proposal was the second time Max proposed to Lorelai in the show.

2 Home For Many

The same home used for Gilmore Girls was used for other popular productions, including Pretty Little Liars and Riverdale. The house has been repainted and spruced up for the different shows, but a closer look will show it is the same house and same set. Still, one couldn’t imagine the Gilmore girls without their beloved home, and couldn’t imagine that same home as the property of anyone else.

Interestingly, it’s not just the actual home of Lorelai which was used by directors of different programs. The dollhouse which is featured in the Gilmore Girls, which Lorelai fought to keep in one of the episodes, was also used in the sitcom Friends.

1 Mom And Daughter Show Commitment

Fans of Gilmore Girls who have really paid attention would have noticed that Rory and Lorelai are in every single episode of the entire run of the show. This means that the actresses didn’t miss a single episode of the 153 that made up the sitcom.

That’s quite impressive. Both actresses stuck it out for the long haul and helped produce a memorable series, with a convincing mother-daughter bond.
