Godzilla King Of The Monsters’ Missing Titans: Abaddon Explained

Abaddon is one of the Titans confirmed to exist in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but like several other Titans, he never appeared onscreen. Who is this creature, and what does the significance of his name say about him?

It was mentioned early in Godzilla: King of the Monsters that at least 17 Titans are known to Monarch. After Emma (Vera Farmiga) and Jonah (Charles Dance) wake up King Ghidorah with the Orca, the three-headed alien monster lets out a call that wakes up all the other Titans from hibernation. So while the action in the third MonsterVerse movie is centered around Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah, four other Titans are seen responding to Ghidorah’s call. The new Titans who join Rodan to gather around Godzilla at the end are Behemoth, Scylla, Methuselah, and a third M.U.T.O. However, it should be noted that this doesn’t include all Titans in the MonsterVerse. There’s also King Kong, and quite a few more who have never appeared on-screen.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Monitor screens at the Monarch base show the names of all the Titans on Monarch’s radar. An outpost is based at each Titan location. Outpost 77, for instance, which is located in Wyoming, is where Abaddon (Titanus Abaddon) was being observed. Abaddon, like all other Titans, hears Ghidorah’s call and answers it, but is never seen, so exactly what he is and what he looks like is open to speculation. However, his name offers clues as to his behavior and role in the MonsterVerse.

Abaddon originates from the Bible. In the New Testament’s Book of Revelation, Abaddon is an angel as well as the king of an army of locusts. Abaddon has been referred to as the “angel of the bottomless pit“, “Destroyer“, “Angel of Death“, and more. Some Biblical experts have even called him the Antichrist, while others have theorized that Abaddon is another name for Satan. Either way, these descriptions of Abaddon indicate that the Titan is a powerful, destructive force that was greatly feared by the humans who knew him.

It’s been confirmed through the actions of Godzilla and Mothra, as well as the redacted text in the credits of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, that some Titans are benevolent creatures. Abaddon’s Biblical connections suggests that he isn’t one of them. Instead, Abaddon could be one of the most destructive and murderous Titans on Earth. The idea that Abaddon may have held this reputation among the ancient cultures makes the mystery of his appearance all the more compelling.
