Green Lantern’s Final Form Turned His Lantern Into Cosmic Armor

In the iconic Kingdom ComeDC’s first Green Lantern, Alan Scott, learned how to incorporate his lantern into his body, thus giving him unlimited power along with signature armor. In the dark future of Kingdom Come, Alan Scott is the sole Green Lantern, and guards the planet from a colossal emerald space station, monitoring and protecting Earth from any extraterrestrial threat after the Justice League disbands. This older, solitary version of Alan no longer requires a ring to channel his abilities as he has incorporated his lantern Starheart into his armor, the constant contact giving the Emerald Knight more power than ever before.

Long before Hal Jordan became an officer of the Green Lantern Corps, Alan Scott discovered a lantern in the wreckage of a train crash full of potent, magical energies called the Green Flame. Scott used these near-unlimited power to become the Green Lantern, a masked hero and later member of the Justice Society of America. Like Hal and Earth’s other Green Lanterns, Alan needed to recharge his ring daily to continue using its power and it had a weakness to wood. Thanks to Starheart’s powers, Alan Scott continues to protect the people of Earth in DC’s mainstream reality, mentoring future incarnations of the JSA, and maintaining good relationships with his children Jennifer-Lynn and Todd, the heroes Jade and Obsidian.

In Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, Alan Scott is Earth’s only Green Lantern in a future where the Justice League disbanded due to public support for Magog, a brutal hero who has no problem with killing criminals. While a new generation of superhumans arise with little consideration for the rules of hero vs. villain, the former Justice League members retreat into solitude or continue to fight behind the scenes. Alan Scott creates a gigantic space station that orbits Earth called New Oa, waiting for a non-existent extraterrestrial threat. He maintains the colossal creation and his new costume, which resembles a suit of armor thanks to his Starheart lantern being incorporated into his chest piece, constantly keeping him at full power.

Kingdom Come’s Alan Scott took the responsibility of being Green Lantern of Sector 2814 to a new level, believing the Earth could become victim any second to an extraterrestrial threat. Despite the elaborate and amazing detail of New Oa, Waid and Ross reimagined Scott as a warrior sitting on a lonely throne, a weapon of incredible power sitting on a shelf collecting dust waiting until it was time to fight again, evoking the legend of King Arthur’s return. He would get that opportunity when Superman reunited the League in hopes of fixing the world and helping to guide it to a better future.

With New Oa becoming the Justice League’s new version of the Watchtower, Green Lantern is seen fighting criminals and getting swept up in the conflicts between the heroes and villains in this rapidly changing atmosphere. As one of the few survivors of the cataclysmic battle at the end of the series, this version of Alan Scott lives on and has even been referenced in the mainstream DC reality. In the JSA arc “Thy Kingdom Come”, their battle with Gog saw Alan Scott assume the emerald armor and sword of his Kingdom Come counterpart, ensuring the ultra-powerful Starheart armor remains an option for Scott’s future in both realities. Although the current DC universe has not become the future Kingdom Come foretold, it is clear that the original Green Lantern’s final form is not far from his grasp at all.
