Grey’s Anatomy: 10 Most Heartbreaking Moments From Season 13

The long-running ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy revolving around the life and career of the central protagonist Meredith Grey has recently kicked off its seventeenth season.

The series won the hearts of millions of viewers over the years and boasts of a range of relatable characters, highlighting a gamut of human emotions. Every season so far has been filled with moments that have made the fans laugh, cry, and be terrified. They have also felt a deep connection with various surgeons, surgical residents, and patients.

While the last couple of seasons haven’t been as popular with fans in comparison to when the show first started, that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth watching. Take season 13 for example – it might not be the most memorable but there sure were some truly heartbreaking moments in there.

10 Alex Karev Doing The Right Thing (13.01)

One of the few characters on the show that went through a significant transformation over the years was that of Alex Karev. Alex went from being an arrogant smartmouth to a mature, reliable, and brilliant pediatric surgeon.

However, one of his lowest points had to be the time he brutally beat up DeLuca in a misunderstanding that involved Jo. As fans remember, season 13 premiered with Alex trying to do the right thing by attempting to apologize to DeLuca and finally turning himself in to the police. While fans agree that there was no justifying his actions, they were a little heartbroken to discover that he thought Jo had been in serious danger.

9 The Last Vestiges Of Japril (13.04)

A beloved couple on Grey’s is Jackson Avery and April Kepner. The couple had a dream romance but their relationship soon went on to be rocky after their first child died, which gradually saw them grow apart.

In season 13, April was seen to be living with Jackson so that the two could pool their resources to look after Harriet together. However, much to the heartbreak of the fans, they had now started to accept that they just weren’t meant to be. The last vestiges of two lovely people with no foreseeable future together are both sweet and sad.

8 The Death Of The 12 Year Old (13.09)

One of the most evocative factors that this hit medical drama has built on for years is the emotional quotient involved with treating patients, saving lives, and doctor-patient relationships.

In episode 9, Grey Sloan has a cascade of patients arriving after an apartment building collapses in the middle of Seattle. One of them is a 12-year-old little girl who is operated on by Richard and Maggie with Stephanie Edwards’ help, but despite all their best efforts the girl passes away, leaving her parents as well as the audience with a deeply moving moment.

7 Miranda Bailey Falls Out With Richard Webber (13.09)

Richard and Miranda are both fan-favorites, and fans have stayed with them since the beginning of the series. These two have shared something akin to a father-daughter relationship and are together responsible for making the hospital what it is today.

In episode 9, Richard discovers that Miranda has agreed to remove him from his position as head of the surgical residency program, something she had earlier promised him. Instead, she decides to replace him with the dubious Eliza Minnick. Richard is naturally hurt and his relationship with Bailey, always one of trust and affection, suffers a heartbreaking setback.

6 Christine’s Baby Is Taken From Her (13.10)

Bailey, along with Arizona and Jo, arrive at a maximum-security prison to help deliver a baby. All three women, especially Jo, get attached to the patient, who is a 16-year-old inmate with a history of violence.

It is revealed that the young woman, Christine, would not be allowed to keep her baby for more than 24 hours, after which her mother would take her child away. The mother turns out to be hard-hearted, unable to forgive her daughter and refuses to ask after Christine’s well-being (despite her having a difficult delivery). The situation, coupled with the moment when Christine has to let go of her baby, is touching, to say the least.

5 Losing Stephanie’s Young Patient (13.14)

The loss of any patient is heartbreaking, but the death of a young child is, of course, particularly shocking. In season 14, the appearance of Eliza Minnick disrupts the equilibrium at Grey Sloan Memorial.

Eliza goes looking for patients with surgical resident Stephanie and attempts to shake things around a bit by allowing Stephanie to take over completely. However, although Stephanie was competent enough, the patient dies on her table, even as she desperately tries to save him. The viewers could see that both women were deeply affected by the loss.

4 Jackson’s Disappointment With His Dad (13.16)

Jackson has a heartbreaking moment when he visits Montana to treat a patient but ends up meeting with his dad, who had abandoned him and his mom at a very young age.

Jackson is profoundly disappointed when he finally gathers the courage to reveal his identity to his father. Robert Avery appears to have very little to say to his son, whom he was literally laying eyes on for the first time as an adult. He also seems to have no sense of guilt for never trying to get in touch with Jackson or even missed spending time with him. Jackson is understandably disillusioned, although he has April to comfort him.

3 Maggie’s Mom Passes Quietly (13.18)

One of the most moving episodes in the entire series was episode 18, “Be Still, My Soul” where Maggie’s adoptive mother, Diane, dies after a long battle with cancer.

Diane was shown to be deeply affectionate, wise, and serene by nature – quite the opposite of Maggie herself who is always on edge and rather intense. Maggie sits with Diane, painting her nails, and in the midst of their conversation, Diane passes away peacefully, leaving Maggie devastated.

2 Meredith Finally Opening Up To Nathan (13.20)

In one of the more harrowing episodes, Meredith finally opens up to Nathan, the first person she ever lets in after losing the love of her life in a shocking accident.

There is something very fulfilling and heart-rending about Meredith gradually being ready to move on from ‘McDreamy.’ She pours her heart out to Nathan, telling him about the people she had lost and eventually agreeing to go out with him.

1 Victoria’s Death (13.21)

The patient Victoria, whom Alex had met quite by chance and immediately asked to get checked for a rash at the courthouse, returns with metastasized cancer, on top of being pregnant.

In a very emotionally draining moment, Victoria agrees to get surgery after giving birth to her baby prematurely. She then dies on the operating table in a tear-jerking sequence and Amelia, greatly moved by the situation, slowly strokes her head as her breathing stops gradually.
