Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Director Hints a Trailer Won’t Release in 2022

The first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 might not be released in 2022, according to director James Gunn. After working for Warner Bros.’ DCEU with The Suicide Squad and its upcoming HBO Max spin-off, Peacemaker, Gunn is now back with Marvel Studios to wrap up his MCU trilogy. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been significantly delayed due to several factors, including the brief removal and rehiring of Gunn as its filmmaker. Now, however, production is in full swing, with the blockbuster set to hit theaters on May 2023.

Despite being pushed back down MCU’s Phase 4 slate, the story for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has long been locked in, as well as its highly anticipated soundtrack. The official plot details have been scant, however, with both Gunn and Marvel Studios being very careful about what is revealed about the film. There have been some official updates about it, however, including the casting of Will Poulter as Adam Warlock. Avengers: Endgame also effectively set up arguably the biggest mystery coming into the threequel with the expected search for 2014 Gamora, whose whereabouts remain unknown after Thanos (Josh Brolin) was defeated. Meanwhile, Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) is also set to be a primary focus in the blockbuster.

With principal photography for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 now ongoing, it’s safe to assume that filming will be finished sometime in the middle of the year. However, audiences shouldn’t expect a trailer to be released in 2022 — at least according to a hint from Gunn on his official Twitter account. When asked to describe the trailer for the film in one word in 2022, the director replied “Nonexistent,” suggesting that it won’t be rolled out until next year. Read Gunn’s tweet below:

The filmmaker purposefully gave a vague answer, given that the marketing schedule for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may not be finalized yet. Marvel Studios has several projects to focus on before the threequel, including a string of new TV shows for Disney+ like Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight, as well as major blockbusters like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Gunn’s response could also be pertaining to the fact that the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s first trailer is currently “non-existent” because he is still busy filming. Gunn may not have even thought about cutting any kind of publicity clip for the movie because he, as well as the rest of the cast and crew, are busy with principal photography.

Assuming that this was Gunn’s way of saying that the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer won’t arrive until 2023, this isn’t something to worry about. The director knows full well that the public is looking forward to the film, since the cosmic heroes have been well established as fan favorites since their MCU debut in 2014. Marvel and Sony didn’t release Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s first trailer until just four months before it rolled out, and it still became a box office hit. Given this, it’s possible the studio is considering the recent Spidey flick a strong blueprint for the marketing strategy for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
