Hacked Version of Friday the 13th Reveals Jason X Map We’ll Never See [Updated]

As Gun Media and IllFonic’s Friday the 13th: The Game slips further into development hell, fans can get a look at a Jason X-inspired map that will sadly never come to be. The semi-open-world game was only released last year, but as Friday the 13th finds itself in the middle of a legal battle, no new content will be produced and players wait until the servers eventually shut down.

Pitting the doomed counselors of Camp Crystal Lake against the machete-wielding Jason Voorhees, Friday the 13th: The Game was a faithful homage to the iconic horror series and its sequels that started back in 198o. Fans already knew that a Jason X update was on its way via leaked content that was fixed, but have been left imagining what it would’ve included thanks to the impending litigation. Imagine no more thanks to a rough look at a Grendel spaceship and the map that never will be.

Shared by a fan-run Friday the 13th: The Game France Facebook page, the video showcases the Grendel map – hacked into an old build of the game – and puts players into the spaceship of the same name from 2001’s maligned Jason X. With sprawling corridors and a tense atmosphere, the 23-minute video plays a little like the terrifying Alien: Isolation.

Picking up in the distant future away from Camp Crystal Lake, the map that’s not to be follows a defrosted Jason wreaking havoc on a crew of unsuspecting scientists who are destined to become his latest batch of victims. Instead, the Grendel map allows players to roam the halls as a standard Jason – which is still pretty fun anyway even if it’s not real.

The rumors claim the unofficial map could have released this month as part of the biggest Friday the 13th: The Game update. If the map had been made and released legitimately, it would’ve also apparently seen the “Uber Jason” skin become playable throughout as well. Uber Jason was leaked early through the game’s Virtual Cabin until developers managed to put a stop to the hackers. Now it seems like gamers will never be able to put on that metallic mask and hack their way through a fresh crop of counselors.

The road to Friday the 13th: The Game was a long one, and as the the 156th most successful crowdfunded project of all time, there were high hopes alongside so much potential for a long-lasting entry to the horror movie tie-in genre of games. With some 38 years of Jason lore to go at, there was plenty to keep developers occupied until the recent court case. As the screenwriter of the original Friday the 13th, Victor Miller has launched a legal case to own the property for himself. This means that all planned DLCs have been scrapped and Friday the 13th: The Game will grind to a halt.

Sadly, Friday the 13th: The Game becomes just another horror story from video game history alongside the likes of Aliens: Colonial Marines. Although fans suggested that Gun Media could continue the game using content not found in the franchise’s 12 movies, developers confirmed that this also isn’t an option. Either way, the Jason X DLC will sadly never get to see the light of day. Alongside the Friday the 13th movie franchise, it looks like video game Jason Voorhees is going to be left in the ground at Camp Crystal Lake for a little longer.

Update: Wes Keltner, President of Gun and co-creator of Friday the 13th: The Game confirms that this video is hacked in from an old video of the game and that he never spoke to the fan-run Facebook page. We apologize for not clearly labelling the Facebook page and have updated the language above.
