Hacks Season 2 News & Updates: Everything We Know

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Hacks, season 1.

HBO Max struck gold with its biting dramedy Hacks, which was renewed for season 2 — here’s what fans can expect for the upcoming installment. The series features a stellar turn from Emmy winner Jean Smart, and the 10-episode, half-hour show from co-creators Paul W. Brown, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky was received with glowing critical praise. Vox declared the show “rare in its ability to be funny and dramatic in equal measure.”

Hacks tells the story of two women in comedy who couldn’t be more different but find out they’re more alike than they’d care to admit. Season 1 chronicles the beginning of the tumultuous relationship of Deborah Vance, an aging Las Vegas stand-up icon, and Ava, a 25-year-old “canceled” comedy writer hired to help Deborah bring a freshness to her material. Predictably, they clash on their very different opinions of what comedy is. The climactic finale to season 1 of Hacks brought their conflict to a resounding slapping point the night Deborah is set to reset her career with the new material she and Ava have worked on.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Hacks season 1 ends setting up a major shift for the second season as Ava and Deborah plan to go on tour to refine Deborah’s new comedy act, despite the material proving disastrous the first time Deborah unveiled it for an audience. Here’s all we know about season 2 of Hacks.

Hacks Season 2 Renewal

To the delight of Hacks and Jean Smart fans, HBO Max renewed the show for a second season just days before the premiere of the final episodes of season 1. When making the announcement Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max said, “We knew immediately that Lucia, Paul and Jen brought us a winner” (Variety).

Hacks Season 2 Release Date

As COVID restrictions are easing in many parts of the country, Hacks could return to production for season 2 as soon as scripts are written and locations are secured. Production could begin as early as the fall of 2021, allowing HBO Max to schedule a return air date for spring 2022. Season 2 could even premiere in mid-May as the first season did in 2021.

Hacks Season 2 Cast

Right now, the entire season 1 cast of Hacks is likely to reappear alongside Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. Ava Carl Clemmons-Hopkins will certainly return as Marcus, Deborah’s right-hand man and newly promoted CEO of her company. If Ava and Deborah do spend time on the road in season 2, viewers may see less of the Hacks’ recurring cast: including Christopher MacDonald as casino owner Marty, Paul W. Downs as Jimmy the agent, Meg Stalter as Kayla, Jimmy’s assistant, and Kaitlin Olsen as Deborah’s daughter, D.J. However, the possible new story direction does open the door for many new guest stars to appear.

Hacks Season 2 Story Details

Hacks’ season finale, season 1, episode 10, “I Think She Can,” set up several storylines for the show’s second installment. Energized about performing again after essentially bombing with most of her new material, Deborah appears to have embraced her partnership with Ava. Their newly repaired and begrudging respect for one another is going to be put to the test as soon as Deborah learns about Ava’s revenge-driven tell-all email that she sent while drunk to the writers of Bitch PM. Additionally, in season 1 of Hacks, Ava’s experiences and what she saw in Vegas were often the butt of the jokes she wrote. The city was also important as being Deborah’s comfort zone. Taking Deborah out of Vegas will surely challenge her, but undoubtedly Smart will wonderfully portray those challenges..
