Halloween Kills Star Says the Trailer Only Spoiled the Tip of the Iceberg

Halloween Kills star James Jude Courtney says the violence in the first trailer is only the tip of the iceberg. Michael Myers has been a well-known face in the horror genre since 1978, and Courtney is the latest actor to take on the role. Courtney first appeared as The Shape in 2018’s Halloween from David Gordon Green and is returning for Halloween Kills this October and Halloween Ends next year.

Green proved that Michael was more than lethal than ever in the latest sequel, which takes place 40 years after John Carpenter’s original movie. 2018’s Halloween featured plenty of gore, but it’s been widely reported that Halloween Kills is going to up the ante. Several cast and crew members have discussed the sequel’s brutality, which became apparent when the first trailer for Halloween Kills premiered a few months ago. Within the two-and-a-half-minute trailer, Michael slays a group of firefighters, stabs a woman in the throat with a lightbulb, and strangles a teenager wearing a Silver Shamrock mask. Trailers often give away too much about the movie, but it looks like that won’t be the case with Halloween Kills.

While attending Flashback Weekend in Chicago, Courtney briefly talked about Halloween Kills. When asked if he felt the trailer gave away too much about the film, Courtney responded by saying, “Honey, the trailer was the tip of the tip of the tip of the iceberg. I’m serious.” Courtney’s comment on the violence in Halloween Kills can be read below:

“Halloween Kills is freaking brutal. It’s brutal. It took me a couple months to recover, swollen knees, you know. After you guys see the film, you ask me this question again and I’ll tell you about the ass kicking I got.”

Actors will always say great things about their films before their release, but Courtney’s comment echos what several other people working on Halloween Kills have already said. Carpenter himself has even called Halloween Kills the ultimate slasher.” Reboots of classic horror movies can be a hit or miss, with movies like Fede Álvarez Evil Dead and the recently released Candyman making an impact on audiences while others like 2010’s A Nightmare on Elm Street fell flat. Thankfully for Michael Myers fans, Green hit the mark with his reboot/sequel, making Halloween Kills one of the most anticipated movies of the year.

The Halloween Kills trailer gave audiences the best look yet at what is in stores come October. Trailers nowadays are often criticized for spoiling too much of the movie, but it’s reassuring that Courtney doesn’t think the trailer gave away too much. After all, it really only showed Michael escaping the fire and the town forming a mob to hunt him down, both of which were expected to happen before the trailer was released. The recent Halloween Kills CinemaCon trailer description revealed even more people killed by Michael Myers, but based on the first trailer, it looks like Universal is saving plenty of surprises for moviegoers to see in theaters.
