Harry Potter: The 10 Richest Hufflepuff Characters

The recent Harry Potter reunion special attracted a lot of eyes but one aspect that stood out was the presence, or rather the lack, of Hufflepuff characters. While Hufflepuff has been overlooked one too many times, the house has a rich tradition within the canon with it housing some very affluent characters.

Hufflepuff has had its fair share of wealthy members throughout its history in the fantastical world of Harry Potter, and despite Hufflepuff not being a central group in the films, the house’s rich history is found primarily in books and video games. From Headmasters to Ministers of Magic, Hufflepuff has produced some of the most successful (and wealthiest) wizards who reign in the world of Harry Potter.

10 Cedric Diggory

The former Hufflepuff prefect might have held more than just academic accolades. Cedric’s father, Amos Diggory, was employed by the Department of Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures in the Ministry of Magic. While the job might not be on the top of the ladder in the Ministry of Magic, it is safe to assume that such a task would be prioritized highly, thus suggesting that the Diggory family had a decent balance in their bank accounts. Plus, it was implied in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire that he was pure-blood which could serve to be another factor in his wealthy background. Despite this, Cedric never managed to inherit the fortune of the Diggory family given his untimely death at the hands of Lord Voldemort.

9 Pomona Sprout

Professor Sprout may not look rich, but that doesn’t mean she’s lacking in financial funds. Given the glamour and prestige attached to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, it can be assumed that they’re paying their professors a hefty sum for their contribution in building the wizards of the future. However, it seems the money never meant too much to the Professor of Herbology. She never displays her wealth. Instead, she usually wears in plain, soil-covered clothes suggesting how less she cared about monetary gain.

8 Nymphadora Tonks

Tonks was an Auror for the Ministry of Magic, which suggests that unlike her husband Remus Lupin, Nymphadora had a decently paying job. Plus, her kin connections and affiliations with the Malfoy and the Black family could lead fans to assume that she came from a wealthy background – although as Sirius points out, almost every pureblood family is related.

She also seemed to have inherited the Tonks house which might not be the biggest house in the series, but it was still spacious enough to room quite a few wizards inside it.

7 Theseus Scamander

Theseus Scamander might have deep pockets given his respected status, especially following his contributions in the first World War which cemented his status as one of the most powerful wizards in the world of Harry Potter. Having served not only as an Auror but later as the Head Auror for the Ministry of Magic during the Global Wizarding War, it is safe to assume that the role might have also come with some monetary benefits. But wealth wasn’t a significant player in Scamander’s personality as far as his role is concerned within the documented boundaries of the wizarding world. Rather, Theseus found other means to gain importance and respect within the society.

6 Helga Hufflepuff

Being one of the four founding members of Hogwarts, Helga Hufflepuff holds the high honor of having one of the four central houses named after her. As a representative of the most esteemed school in the wizarding world, she is likely to have has quite a bit of money.

One of her possessions during her lifetime was the golden cup which holds great relevance in the Harry Potter canon, and is a strong indicator of the wealthy life she lived. Of course, it’s difficult to speculate about her wealth beyond this, but most fans would assume she was relatively well-off!

5 Newt Scamander

As fans know through Gilderoy Lockhart, successful authors tend to make a lot of money in the world of Harry Potter, and thus it is safe to assume that Scamander’s bestseller ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ made quite a lot. It is noted that money was a major incentive for Newt Scamander to take up the job of writing the first edition of the book. Plus the fact that he was an expert Magizoologist and worked for the Ministry of Magic makes him one of the richest Hufflepuff members known to fans.

4 Giffard Abbott

Much like Albus Dumbledore, who has his own fortune, Giffard Abbott served as the Headmaster of Hogwarts holding the responsibility of overseeing the school in the early 1900s. It isn’t a stretch to say that this position comes with a very decent paycheck. Plus, it is likely that he is of pure-blood decent, as the Abbott family only began marrying into Muggles in the mid-1900s. Such a status in the wizarding world hints towards a greater source of opportunities to gain money.

3 Justin Finch-Fletchley

Justin Finch-Fletchley potentially belongs to one of the richest families featured in the Harry Potter canon. Despite belonging to a muggle family, there are a lot of hints suggesting his status as being one of the wealthy students in Hogwarts despite being one of the least featured characters in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Prior to his invitation from Hogwarts, the Finch-Fletchley family was planning on sending Justin to Eton College, which is one of the most prestigious schools in England – and is extremely expensive.

Another indicator of his wealthy background is his acquaintance with Draco Malfoy, who has been known to associate himself with only those who either are of equal social status to himself or could bring him some gain. When Malfoy took up Ping Pong, he offered money to Fletchley to teach him the sport, but the Hufflepuff member turned it down, thus suggesting that he had no need for extra cash.

2 Grogan Stump

Grogan Stump served as the Minister for Magic from 1811 – 1819. While the Ministry of Magic might have been unfair to wizards like Harry Potter at times, the post of the Minister is equivalent to being the Prime Minister in the Muggle world, which comes with a lot of money and power. Stump is also credited as being the creator of several departments in the Ministry of Magic including The Department of Control and Regulation of Magical Creatures. The foundation of such wings comes with its own monetary perks. Minister for Magic for 8 years, Stump must have made a fortune.

1 Artemisia Lufkin

Preceding Stump as the Minister for Magic, Artemisia manages to trump Stump when it comes to wealth and claims her throne atop some of the richest known Hufflepuffs in history. 13 years in office is likely to land anyone in good money especially when they are the Minister for Magic at a crucial point at the turn of the century. With so many feathers under her cap, Lufkin is likely to have been monetarily rewarded for her accolades but it seems that her contributions to the wizarding world didn’t come from a place of greed, rather from a sentiment of making society a better place.
