Hawkeye Haters Have Never Been Right (And DC Just Proved It)

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Dark Knights of Steel #1

Fans have long wondered why, amid the nearly unstoppable heroes that make up the Avengers, someone like Hawkeye made the cut as one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but DC Comics just proved why Clint Barton is worthy of being on the team. Hawkeye and Green Arrow share such a similar skill set that when Green Arrow shows how deadly he can be with a bow and arrow, it’s probably a good representation of what Hawkeye can do as well. And one of Green Arrow’s latest feats proves why he and Hawkeye have remained such prevalent characters in their respective universes.

In Dark Knights of Steel #1 by Tom Taylor and Yasmine Putri, fans are thrown into an alternate DC Universe in which Jor-El and a pregnant Lara both travel to a medieval Earth rather than just sending Kal-El, AKA Superman. Once they learn of the awesome power they possess on Earth, the Kryptonians develop a kingdom to rule over. Creating tension in the land by their rule, other medieval versions of DC characters rally against the king and plot to assassinate him. Green Arrow, using a kryptonite arrow, takes a shot at Jor-El while the king stands on top of the wall outside of his castle. The impossible shot hits its mark, striking the Kryptonian in the eye, killing him instantly.

Green Arrow, a mere human, being successful in killing an all-powerful Kryptonian proves his worth among other DC heroes. While it wasn’t Hawkeye who took the killing shot on the Kryptonian King, his abilities and Green Arrow’s are oftentimes interchangeable. And while Green Arrow’s feat is the latest example of why Hawkeye is worthy to call himself an Avenger, it is far from the first time their shared skillset has been pivotal in the success of their respective teams.

In Age of Ultron, written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Brian Hitch, Paul Neary, and Paul Mounts, Ultron takes over most of the world, leaving a desolate wasteland in his wake. Spider-Man is held captive and it’s up to Hawkeye to save him. He uses his marksmanship to dismantle the crew holding Spidey as no other hero could. Not only does Hawkeye take out his enemies from a distance, as Green Arrow had done in Dark Knights of Steel, he also shows how deadly he is in close quarters, running into a dilapidated building, extracting Spider-Man, and escaping with their lives.

From using their abilities to kill beings far more powerful than themselves, to using them to save their fellow heroes, Hawkeye and Green Arrow have proven their worth many times over. No other hero could have taken out the Jor-El, and no one else had the skills necessary to save Spider-Man, but the arrow-firing heroes accomplished their respective missions either way. Hawkeye haters have never been right about how the hero doesn’t deserve the title of Avenger, and the latest example of why he has earned his spot on the team was shown through an unbelievable shot taken by Green Arrow, the latest of countless examples written throughout Marvel and DC Comics history.
