HBO’s Last Of Us Set Video Shows Joel & Ellie Up Close On Horseback

A new video from the set of HBO’s upcoming The Last of Us gives fans an up-close look at Joel and Ellie riding on horseback through the post-apocalyptic United States. There have been multiple attempts to adapt Naughty Dog’s beloved video games, including The Last of Us, which was released on PlayStation 3 in 2013. All of those film adaptations were abandoned before HBO announced plans for a television series back in 2020.

Co-president of Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann is co-developing, co-writing, and co-directing HBO’s The Last of Us with Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin also serving as a writer. Like the first game in the video game franchise, the show’s story revolves around Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler living in the post-apocalyptic U.S. who is tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the country for a militia group known as the Fireflies. The series also stars Nico Parker as Joel’s daughter, Sarah, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, and Merle Dandridge, who reprises her role as the games’ Firefly leader Marlene. Naughty Dog, PlayStation Productions, and HBO’s The Last of Us is currently filming in Canada and is projected to wrap sometime in June of 2022.

Based upon previously leaked/released photos from the series, HBO’s The Last of Us looks to be incredibly faithful to its source material, recreating the game’s iconic moments and locations. For example, fans have gotten a look at areas in Alberta that have been transformed into Austin, Texas, during the Cordyceps outbreak, the Boston Quarantine Zone, and post-apocalyptic Jackson, Wyoming. Partway through The Last of Us’ story, Joel takes Ellie to Wyoming to find his brother, Tommy, a former Firefly, in the hope that he can help them locate the remaining Fireflies. Tommy provides Joel and Ellie with a horse and directs them to a Fireflies enclave at the University of Eastern Colorado, which they reach on horseback. Suffice to say, Pascal and Ramsey are most likely filming a scene around the game’s “Winter” section in the video above.

The Last of Us game essentially cuts from Jackson to the University of Eastern Colorado, skipping over most of the travel time. However, the 10-episode series may not. The Last of Us is set to introduce characters, plot points, and locations that weren’t in the first game. Perhaps the biggest takeaway from this new video reinforces the idea that the production and its massive budget are doing everything they can to recapture the look and feel of the game. Looks aside, it remains to be seen if they can recapture the magic of the game’s central relationship.
