Hocus Pocus 2: Everything The OTHER Sequel Revealed In 2018

A sequel to the infamous Hocus Pocus already exists, but it tells a different story from the highly anticipated cinematic sequel. Fans of the first Hocus Pocus film may be unaware of the sequel that was released in 2018 considering it was a book rather than a film. Hocus Pocus and the All-New Sequel is a two-part young adult novel written by A.W. Jantha, which was released on the 25th anniversary of the 1993 film.

The ending to the first Hocus Pocus film suggested that there would be no return for the fan-favorite Sanderson sisters due to the fact that they turn into solidified rock and the main characters seemingly live happily ever after. However, the 2018 novelization proved that there is a way forward for the Sanderson sister’s story to continue, incorporating much-loved themes from the Hocus Pocus film and introducing new characters into the mix. In fact, the book sequel to Hocus Pocus proves that there is nothing to worry about with the Disney+ version in terms of fresh narratives.

While the plot to the Hocus Pocus sequel on Disney+ has been kept fairly under wraps, there have been some indications that it will be steering away from the novel. However, this doesn’t mean that the Disney+ sequel won’t utilize any of the plot points from Hocus Pocus and the All-New Sequel. In fact, the book sequel had its fair share of intriguing revelations that fans may not know about.

Max & Allison Had A Daughter, PoppyDani Allison And Max At The Sanderson House In Hocus Pocus

Set 25 years after the events in Hocus Pocus, fans will be pleased to learn that budding couple Max and Allison went on to get married. In fact, they even have a daughter named Poppy, who is 17 years old during the Hocus Pocus sequel novel’s events. Poppy is an aspiring photographer and, similar to her father in Hocus Pocus, she isn’t a fan of Halloween. Like other teenagers her age, Poppy is navigating a variety of things in her life such as teen bullies, her sexuality, and a disconnected relationship with her parents.

Poppy Doesn’t Believe Her Parents’ LegendMax lighting the Black Flame Candle in Hocus Pocus

Of course, Max and Allison have told Poppy all about their encounter with the Sanderson sisters, but she doesn’t believe them. Also, alongside Poppy is her best friend, Travis, who is aware of her parent’s witch-filled family history, but extremely skeptical about the validity of their claims. Ultimately, Poppy’s ignorance about the Sanderson sisters results in their return. Max and Allison’s experience with the Sanderson sisters in Hocus Pocus is shown to still affect them many years later, with Halloween playing a drastically different role in their lives now as they try to do what they can to enjoy the holiday while also keeping Poppy safe.

How The Sanderson Sisters Came BackHocus Pocus 2 Sanderson Sisters

Following even more in her father’s footsteps, Poppy develops a crush on the popular girl at school named Isabella. Poppy and Travis ultimately befriend Isabella, which is when Poppy tells her all about her family’s encounter with the Sanderson sisters. Unlike Travis, Isabella develops an interest in the Sanderson sisters, believing Max and Allison’s story. In order to impress Isabella, Poppy travels to the infamous Sanderson house on Halloween night, which also happens to be a Blood Moon, despite her parent’s efforts to keep her safe. While at the Sanderson house, Poppy and Travis use a Ouija board and mess around with the Sanderson spell book when Poppy reads out an exchange spell. Similarly toHocus Pocus, the Sanderson sisters return; but this time, the original trio, Max, Allison, and Dani take their places in Hell.

How To Defeat The Sanderson Sisterssanderson sisters hanging - hocus pocus

In order to defeat the Sanderson sisters, the new trio, Poppy, Travis, and Isabella, must find and destroy a moonstone. The moonstone is a mystical object that grants eternal life, and it is revealed to have been passed down through the Sanderson family for centuries. If the moonstone is destroyed, then every spell that has ever been cast by the Sanderson sisters will be undone, resulting in their prompt return back to Hell. Of course, like in Hocus Pocus, the Sanderson’s do not make this an easy task for Poppy and her friends, utilizing parts of the modern world that they are in to their advantage, such as using mobile phones to place the entire town of Salem under a spell.

The Other Returning CharactersSplit image of Max Dennison, Dani Dennison, and human Thackery Binx in Hocus Pocus

As mentioned previously, Hocus Pocus heroes, Max and Allison make a return as Poppy’s parents, with Max, now a high-school teacher, and Allison, a lawyer. Their return also wouldn’t be complete without Max’s little sister, Dani, who is now 33 years old and maintains a close relationship with her family, regularly spending time with Max, Allison, and Poppy. Other surprise appearances from 1993’s Hocus Pocus include Thackery and Emily, who only appear briefly in the novel, but play a helping hand in guiding Poppy and her friends toward defeating the Sanderson sisters for a second time.

There’s A Fourth Sanderson Sister

The biggest reveal in Hocus Pocus and the All-New Sequel is that there is actually a fourth Sanderson sister, Elizabeth. In fact, Poppy’s crush Isabella is actually a descendant of the fourth Sanderson sister herself. Unlike her evil sisters, Elizabeth goes against her family’s expectations of using magic for malicious purposes. It is revealed in the book that Elizabeth even attempted to stop Emily from being lured by Sarah’s “Come Little Children” lullaby in Hocus Pocus. Ultimately, Elizabeth’s good-hearted nature proves to be a huge advantage for Poppy and her friends, as it is revealed that the Sanderson sister’s mother gave Elizabeth the moonstone knowing that she would never use its powers, unlike her eldest daughter, Winifred.

While the Disney+ sequel to Hocus Pocus has found a different heroic trio to lead its narrative, there are still some elements from the novel that could appear in the film. In particular, a fourth Sanderson sister is a likely contender, due to Hannah Waddingham being cast as “The Witch”, however, there is currently no information that points to this character being a secret Sanderson sister. Additionally, while the popular Hocus Pocus trio, Max, Allison, and Dani, will not be returning for the Disney+ sequel to Hocus Pocus, the book proves that they have a story left that is worth telling and one that is full of nostalgia.
