House of the Dragon Season 2 Could Bring Back Young Rhaenyra & Alicent

House of the Dragon season 2 could bring back both young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) and Queen Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey). Set around 200 years before the events of the hit HBO television show Game of Thrones, the new fantasy-drama series focuses on the House Targaryen during the height of their reign over the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. After King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) names his daughter Rhaenyra as heir to the Iron Throne, members of the king’s council and family conspire against him, eventually leading to the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Upon its release, House of the Dragon has received near universal praise by critics and fans alike for its clever writing, outstanding direction, and compelling performances from its cast—especially from its young stars, Alcock and Carey, who have been singled-out for their captivating portrayals of young women struggling with their roles in power. However, House of the Dragon‘s co-showruner, Ryan Condal, previously revealed that House of the Dragon season 1 will have a time-jump of about 10 years. As a result, Alcock and Carey will be recast with Misbehaviour‘s Emma D’Arcy and Ready Player One‘s Olivia Cooke, respectively.

Carey recently spoke to THR and revealed that she and Alcock could return for House of the Dragon season 2. The actor admitted that there have been talks discussing the possibility of the stars’ return, but she also shared that she has no secret information, claiming that she knows “absolutely nothing.” Read what the Alcock had to say, below:

“It’s been spoken about, conversations have happened, but, in all honesty, I know absolutely nothing and I have no idea. Of course, I would love to come back. It depends on how it’s received and where they want take the show next. I’m just going with the flow!”

Although Carey admitted that she is not privy to important information regarding Alcock’s or her return to House of the Dragon in season 2, she has revealed that there have been talks, likely from the showrunners, about how they can be used again in the years to come. As the series deals with nearly 30 years of the House Targaryen’s history, it is possible for Carey and Alcock to reprise their roles as Princess and Queen in flashbacks of future episodes. Although Cooke and D’Arcy will claim the roles of Rhaenyra and Alicent for the remainder of the show following the time-jump, the younger stars can fill in the gaps of the narrative if elaboration of backstory is required.

House of the Dragon intends to tell a tale of a generational war between different factions of Targaryens. To firmly establish character motivations for the elaborate war to come, the writers will need to properly lay the groundwork so that all the machinations of the scheming parties, as well as the emotional payoffs, are well constructed. With House of the Dragon season 1 not yet halfway completed, audiences will have to wait and see how Carey and Alcock can return for season 2.
