How Captain Marvel’s Lashana Lynch Learned She Died in WandaVision

Lashana Lynch has revealed how she learned her character, Maria Rambeau, was to die off-screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as confirmed in WandaVision. The actress, who plays Nomi in the newly released Bond film No Time to Die, was one of the highlights of the supporting cast in Captain Marvel. Lynch has yet to make a second appearance in the MCU, but canonically her character was confirmed dead in the recent Disney+ series.

Maria Rambeau was the best friend of Carol Danvers on Earth, before the aspiring pilot flew off to become the cosmic superhero Captain Marvel. Reuniting with her superhuman friend to battle the Skrulls and later the Kree, Rambeau was last seen continuing to raise her young daughter Monica while Carol took to space to protect other planets. With Captain Marvel being a 1990s-based period piece, Rambeau has not been since in the present day MCU, but all loose-ends seemed tied up forever when the character was killed off-screen, having succumbed to terminal illness as confirmed in WandaVision episode 4, “We Interrupt This Program.” Her daughter, Monica, now an adult S.W.O.R.D agent, was one of the standout new characters in the genre-bending miniseries released earlier this year.

In an interview with ComicBook, Lynch revealed how she was made well-aware of her character’s fate over a year before audiences, saying she was contacted by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige himself. Lynch said Feige showed a lot of “care” in ensuring she was the first to know about her character’s death, and spoke of the sadness of losing a character with such a “massive impact” so prematurely. However, Lynch went on to praise the legacy the character leaves behind, specifically in the form of Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, Maria’s daughter. Read Lynch’s full comments below:

“Kevin Feige, who is the nicest guy, personally emailed me way before, I want to say, over a year, year-and-a-half-plus, before WandaVision aired and explained what was happening, how it was going to happen, when it was going to happen … specifically saying that he didn’t want me to find out through anyone else. So there was a lot of care around that … It was sad to read, but also, because I think Maria had such a massive impact on Captain Marvel and everyone loved her and really related to her … I felt good with the work that I did there and felt good that they were able to now continue her legacy in her daughter, which is amazing … And the introduction to her powers in WandaVision is also amazing, so I feel genuinely proud. I’m just happy I knew beforehand and didn’t find out online somewhere.”

While Lynch’s character is officially dead in the main MCU timeline, fans are still eager to see Maria Rambeau return in some form, and their wishes may well be fulfilled. Lynch was recently pictured dining with Parris and Nia DaCosta in London, where the latter is directing the former in the upcoming sequel to Captain Marvel, titled The Marvels. These photos have fuelled rumors and speculation that Maria Rambeau may be back, despite her death, either through flashbacks or via the ever-present MCU multiverse established in Phase 4.

Lynch neither addresses or confirms whether she will return to the MCU in the future, but her fondness for the character and the direction the franchise is taking shows that no bridges are burned, and leaves the door open for future appearances. Until then, Lynch can be seen in action as the first female 007 agent, competing sportingly with Daniel Craig’s James Bond in No Time To Die. Between her Captain Marvel role and recent entry to the Bond franchise, Lynch is steadily building up an impressive portfolio as an action hero.
