How Netflix’s Last Airbender Cast Compares To The Avatar Characters’ Ages

Netflix has announced some of the young stars of its Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action reboot, but how does the new cast compare to the original characters in terms of age? The animated series started as a kids show on Nickelodeon with a pretty young ensemble of central characters, and many fans have wondered if the Netflix remake will hold true to that model as well. Now that some of the new show’s stars have been revealed, the answer is finally here.

Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s timeline covers about one year in-universe, meaning that the characters don’t age that much from beginning to end. At the start, Aang and Toph are both 12 years old (though Aang is technically 112), Katara and Azula are about 14, and Sokka and Zuko are both about 16. However, the Avatar universe also uses a slightly different culturalized perception of age, similar to Game of Thrones, through which characters are seen as being more mature at younger ages than in the real world.

So how does the new live-action Avatar remake cast compare to their characters in terms of age? It turns out, pretty well. Gordon Cormier, who is set to play Aang, is 11 years old, making him just about the perfect age to portray the Avatar. Kiawentiio, who will play Katara, is 15 – again, very close to her character’s original age in the animated show. Ian Ousley, who will portray Sokka, is 19. That’s a few years older than the character is in the original series, but the physical difference between 16 and 19 is minimal, so the character will likely be kept around 16 years old. And lastly, Dallas Liu, who is set to play Zuko, is nearly 20, but he’s played younger teenage characters often in his career, such as in Pen15.

All in all, it seems that Netflix is staying pretty true to the original cartoon in regards to the ages of the characters in the Avatar remake. That means that the tone of the show will probably remain appropriate for younger viewers, rather than shifting to a more young adult audience as other Netflix series like Fate: The Winx Saga have done. For longtime Avatar: The Last Airbender fans, that’s great news.

Of course, the live-action Avatar remake still has a lot to prove. The original show is viewed by many as one of the greatest of all time, making it an incredibly difficult act to follow. But so far, with the cast and creative team announced so far, it looks like Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender remake is headed in the right direction.
