How To Send A Secret Message On iPhone

An iPhone can send a secret message, and there are a few different ways to do this using apps and features that Apple includes on every phone. Apple is serious about privacy and security but also likes to have fun, so it’s no surprise that there are two approaches to sending secret messages with an iPhone, one being playful and the other aiming to keep it seriously hidden.

iMessages are inherently private, being encrypted on the sending iPhone and unencrypted by the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Mac computer that receives the text, photos, and other media. Along the potentially long and twisty path through the internet, the message is securely locked, and even Apple can’t decrypt an iMessage. So, in a way, every iMessage sent from an iPhone is secret. However, text messages to an Android phone are sent as an SMS text and MMS media, formats that don’t support encryption.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

On the entertainment side, Apple gave the iPhone an iMessage effect that breaks text and media up into scrambled pixels. The recipient must tap the message to reveal the text or image, and each tap unveils a bit more. To send an iMessage like this, press and hold the send button and select the Bubble effect called ‘Invisible Ink.’ iMessages sent with the ‘Invisible Ink’ effect provide some extra protection from anyone nearby that might see the screen, so it’s not only a fun surprise. A shared note is also an entertaining way to have a secret chat.

Seriously Secret Messages

If an entire iPhone conversation is meant to be private, it would be a hassle to apply a Bubble effect every time. Since the message has to be read at some point, it will need to appear on-screen at least once. Notifications, sounds and previews can be limited, though, so it isn’t apparent that a conversation is going on. In the Settings app, under the Notifications tab, the user can find the Messages app and set Previews to ‘Never’ and adjust banners and sounds if that is needed.

It’s also possible to bypass the Messages app entirely and use an unexpected chatting method. Users can create a shared note made with an iPhone in the built-in Notes app to provide another channel for communication. To share a note, the user should open the Notes app, create or select a note, tap the ‘…’ button in the upper-right corner, choose ‘Share Note,’ and then choose how to send the invitation. The recipient will have access to this secret communication channel also. Rather than a plain iPhone chat via the Messages app, it becomes a shared document that can be very entertaining.
