Iron Man Cosplay Replaces Arc Reactor with Magic

A medieval Iron Man cosplay turns the Armored Avenger into a powerful sorcerer, courtesy of a skilled creator at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo. But while the comic-book Tony Stark personally hates magic, there’s actually a surprising amount of precedent both for the shift in time period and the focus on the mystic arts.

A Chicago-based fan convention celebrating comics, anime, movies, games, television and other assorted pop culture, ‘C2E2’ enjoys the usual high-quality fan costumes of such a large event, as well as panels and exhibitions. But while Iron Man has experience both with the mystic arts and medieval adventures – and the costume has elements similar to the Stark/Thor combo character Iron Hammer – the cosplay in question isn’t a comic recreation but an original conceit, combining the Iron Man armor with sun imagery and its very own Avengers-brand Darkhold.

Shared to Reddit by cosplayer Briarwood (as well as Twitter), the Iron Man cosplay replaces the Avenger’s typical Arc Reactor with a glowing sun ornament, scaling back the usual armored suit to greaves, gauntlets, a chestplate, pauldrons, and a helmet (though in the image, this is replaced by a flower crown.) The cosplayer – who also shared the piece on Twitter – holds a book inscribed with runes and bearing the Avengers’ ‘A’ logo, evoking a version of Iron Man whose medieval smithing apparently went hand in hand with some dangerous reading, given how much the tome brings to mind Scarlet Witch’s Darkhold, which can transform the reader into their darkest self.

Iron Man famously traveled back to King Arthur’s Camelot in ‘Doomquest,’ taking Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom along for the ride. While Tony Stark served the round table, Doom studied under Morgan le Fay, in an adventure that made one of Tony’s fondest wishes come true. It’s a story that’s likely to become even more relevant in the near future, as Marvel is currently in the process of emphasizing the connections between King Arthur and the Black Knight, Kang, Thor, and even the X-Men, with some fans speculating the ruler will be taking on a major villain role in the near future of the comics.

When it comes to Iron Man’s magical prowess, however, comics canon instructs fans to look to the future, not the past, as one potential timeline sees Tony Stark take over from Doctor Strange as the Sorcerer Supreme of the distant future. It’s a shocking reveal, but one that makes a certain amount of sense – Tony may hate magic in the modern day, but he’s always looking for a new challenge, and the mystic arts would certainly provide that.

Briarwood’s medieval Iron Man shows how surprisingly versatile the Avenger’s armor can be when creators settle on a theme, finding a fresh way to reimagine a character who has worn everything from frozen ‘Ice Age Man’ armor in 1,000,000 BC to armor complete with a metal hawk in Ancient Egypt, making it no wonder that cosplayers keep turning to Tony Stark for inspiration.
