Jamie Lee Curtis Reflects On Playing Halloween’s Laurie Strode For 44 Years

Jamie Lee Curtis reflects on playing Laurie Strode in the Halloween franchise for 44 years as she makes what could be her last movie in the series. Thanks to 1978’s Halloween, Curtis will be forever immortalized on Hollywood’s list of the best scream queens of all time. She made a name for herself playing Laurie Strode, one of the only survivors of Michael Myers’ first massacre, in the John Carpenter film; since then, Curtis has played Laurie across 6 movies, helping to reboot the franchise a few times over the years.

It was Curtis’ return to Halloween in 2018 that gave the long-running slasher property new life and pushed it into its current trilogy. The 2018 Halloween served as a direct sequel to the original film and picked up with a PTSD-riddled Laurie as she prepares for her final showdown with Michael. Last fall saw the release of Halloween Kills, the second installment in the new trilogy, and it’ll be followed up by Halloween Ends later this year. It remains to be seen if it will finally bring the Michael Myers saga to a close, but many signs – including its title – suggest it might.

Either way, Curtis is feeling the significance of this moment as she films Halloween Ends. Over the weekend, Curtis shared an emotional post on social media as she came to the realization that she has been playing Laurie for 44 years. “Her dreams became mine. Her nightmares too,” she wrote. “Throughout it all a profound sense of gratitude to the fans that have kept her relevant and gave me employment for such a long time and I’m so f*^%ing exited by this new movie we are making.” Curtis also shared a side-by-side comparison of herself from the first Halloween and from the 2018 movie. Halloween Ends has begun sharing some first look images with fans, starting with a recent look at Curtis back on set as Laurie. Last year’s Halloween Kills drew some mixed responses from fans, but the stage has been set for an epic finale. Should this truly be the final film in the franchise, one has to hope it will give Laurie the sendoff she deserves. After all these years, Curtis has built her up into one of the most iconic horror heroines of all time, and she deserves to go out in a blaze of glory. Preferably, that blaze will see her alive by the time the credits roll.

44 years is an impressive amount of time to be playing a character, and Curtis broke the record for number of repeat appearances in the Halloween franchise with Kills. Some actors might feel disillusioned after playing the same character over so many years, but it’s clear Curtis feels nothing but affection for Laurie and the movies that have kept her alive (well, mostly). It’s going to be very exciting to see her take on the role one more time with Halloween Ends; here’s hoping it’s worth the wait.
