Jason Momoa reveals he won’t allow his teenage kids to watch his early career roles, namely Baywatch: Hawaii and Game of Thrones, amongst others. The Hawaiian actor made his debut in the former series, which acted as a continuation of the David Hasselhoff-led hit as production costs proved too high to continue in Los Angeles. However, due to low ratings and poor reviews, the series would be canceled after just two seasons.
After rebounding with a lead role on the hit SYFY series Stargate Atlantis, Momoa would truly breakthrough as Khal Drago on HBO’s mammoth Game of Thrones series in 2011. He would begin to find big-screen stardom when Zack Snyder cast Momoa for the DC Extended Universe as Arthur Curry, better known as Aquaman, with the character first appearing with a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before properly being introduced with Justice League and getting his own film in 2018. Production is currently underway on a sequel to Aquaman and this year will see Momoa return to the screen with See season 2, Netflix’s Sweet Girl and Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune.
The Hawaiian star recently caught up with the Australian radio series Fitzy and Wippa (Via EW) to discuss his upcoming work and his family life. In reflecting on his past work, Momoa revealed he won’t let his kids watch most of his early work, namely Baywatch: Hawaii, Conan the Barbarian and Game of Thrones, even though the HBO series “is fantastic.” See what Momoa said below:
“They got to see a lot of stuff that Papa’s been doing. The earlier things in my career, you can’t see that. But you can see the new things. We don’t say the B-word at home! We hide all of that mate! Never happened mate! We don’t talk about those words, the B-word didn’t happen. Right now, superheroes and on, we’re good. They got to be there on Justice League. Wolfie’s worn the cowl and she’s worn the tiara from Wonder Woman. I think the kids are really happy.”
Few actors can say they had the privilege of hitting the ground running smoothly in their careers and while Momoa’s early work wasn’t a complete mess, it certainly wasn’t a good indicator of the talent he could bring to the screen. Even in its original run, Baywatch was poorly received by critics and with Hawaii only lasting two short seasons and receiving lower reviews than its predecessor, it’s understandable Momoa would want to distance himself and his kids from the series. The same could be said for the 2011 adaptation of Conan the Barbarian, a film that was largely dismissed by critics and audiences and was a box office bomb upon its release.
While Momoa may not have given a specific reason as to why his kids aren’t allowed to watch Game of Thrones, those who have seen the series or are even vaguely familiar with it will understand why. Between its graphic violence and sexual content, no parent would want to actively promote the show to their children of any age, let alone when said parent is conducting much of both. Momoa and his family can at least take comfort in his recent string of hits and the anticipation fans have for his upcoming roster of projects, namely Dune and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the latter of which Momoa has even received a writing credit on.
