John McAfee Reportedly Found Dead In Prison After Extradition Granted

John McAfee has died by apparent suicide at the age of 75 in a Spanish prison, according to the latest reports citing confirmation from the justice department in Spain. The news comes shortly after a Spanish court had approved extradition of McAfee to the United States. McAfee, known for creating the antivirus software of the same name, was a controversial figure, even running for President in 2020.

McAfee founded McAfee Associates in 1987 and the company became known for its antivirus software. Available for free to individual users and licensed to companies, McAfee antivirus became a leader in the market. Since then, that market has continued to grow and now applies to more devices than ever. After resigning from the computer security company, McAfee remained in the spotlight for a variety of reasons, including in relation to other technology developments, such as cryptocurrencies.

Multiple outlets and Spanish newspapers, including El Mundo, have reported the death of John McAfee, while also citing confirmation from the Catalan Justice Department. At present, the reports suggest McAfee died from an apparent suicide, although the details on this have yet to be confirmed. Investigations surrounding the death are still ongoing. McAfee was reportedly found dead in a prison cell in Barcelona’s Centre Penitenciari Brians 2. Prison medical staff attempted to resuscitate McAfee, but the attempts proved unsuccessful.

McAfee Death Follows Extradition Approval

Reports from earlier today confirmed that a Spanish high court had ruled McAfee could be extradited to the United States to face charges, after being arrested in the country in late 2020. McAfee had been accused of evading paying tax through a variety of measures, including using cryptocurrency and concealing assets, according to the BBC citing the US Justice Department. In a still-pinned Tweet to McAfee’s official Twitter account, McAfee denied U.S. claims of hiding crypto.

McAfee played an important role in the development of online security and the effects of those early advances are just as apparent today. With consumers now having access to significantly more devices that are capable of connecting to the internet, and requiring protection from the ever-growing number of online threats, the emphasis on user privacy and security set out by McAfee is now more important than ever. So much so that even companies like Apple are now placing privacy and security at the center of their marketing efforts and product releases.
