Jujutsu Kaisen Live-Action Fan Film Recreates One Of Season 1’s Best Fights

The battle sequence from Jujutsu Kaisen is reimagined in a live-action fan film from season 1 of the anime series. Produced by the Japanese studio known as MAPPA, the anime follows the journey of a high school student named Yuji Itadori as he joins the Tokyo Jujutsu High School of Sorcery after the demon Ryomen Sukuna invades inside the protagonist’s body. Despite Itadori being the main protagonist, one of the beloved fan-favorite animated scenes, derives between Maki Zenin and Kasumi Miwa.

Known for their live-action fan productions, RE: Anime shares their newest film project, recreating the iconic fight sequence between Maki and Miwa from season 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen. As Maki’s primary advantage is her proficiency in weaponry in the anime, her combat is the main focus in the fight scenes as she wields a long pole-arm. The live-action adaptation follows and modifies the difficult fight choreography of the respective animation between Maki and Miwa in an epic brawl in the river, while still carrying the faceplate stunt and combat themes from the original series. The phenomenal live-action short of Jujutsu Kaisen demonstrates the capabilities of films to adapt animated series onto the big screen. The only notable difference in the live-action film in comparison to her animated counterpart was Miwa’s personality shift and tone change. Overall, the fan film production of the series proves how well-animated fight scenes can be translated into live-action scenes. In the past, Netflix has fashioned live-action anime adaptations for the subscription platform, such as Death Note and Cowboy Bepop, but failed to capture the audience’s grasps through their creative processes.

With the titular success of the anime series, Jujutsu Kaisen, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 made its debut as the first feature-length prequel for the hit anime series. The film earned the title of the second-biggest premiere opening for any film in Japan. Although official information has not been released for theaters in the West, fans are expecting a global theatrical release due to the financial prosperity the film brought in Japan.
