Just Cause: Mobile Offers 30-Player PVP & 4-Player Co-Op Next Year

Square Enix has announced Just Cause is expanding the series into mobile gaming territory, introducing 30-player competitive multiplayer and 4-player co-op. The announcement was made during the Game Awards 2020. It will be a free-to-play mobile extension of the previous Just Cause games. A major feature of the mobile edition is the introduction of multiplayer for the first time, allowing players to partner with teammates or fight against them in multiple open-world environments. The game is coming to IOS and Android. Players control a member of the Firebrand program as they challenge the Darkwater corporation. Fans may feel slighted at knowing that the main protagonist of the series, Rico, will not feature in the mobile game but the relentless multiplayer action should make up for this.

As is typical of the Just Cause series, players are safe to assume there will be no shortage of explosions and grappling hooks. The mobile version represents the first time Square Enix is including multiplayer in any official Just Cause game. The announcement follows persistent rumors that Just Cause 5 may already be in development just two years following the release of the fourth installment. After its original release back in 2006, Just Cause has gone on to sell over one million copies around the world. Previously, the series has only ever launched for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

According to Square Enix, the multiplayer system is capable of hosting as many as 30 players. Additional features include 4 player co-op missions and four distinctive game modes, including horde mode in which players must survive as huge numbers of enemies swarm around them. The multiplayer mode is titled “Triple Threat” and it pits three teams of 10 against one another. Players will have to coordinate offensive and defensive strategies with their teammates to capture as many bases as possible before their opponents do. The app will not cost players any money to download. The graphics are powered by Unreal Engine 4 and highlight responsive touch controls. Players will be able to utilize an array of transportation options, including parachute, wingsuit and grapple.

Back in early December, Just Cause creator and Avalanche Studious founder Christofer Sundberg revealed he is opening a new gaming studio, the latest in a growing number of veteran game developers establishing brand-new game studios. There are strong indications that this transition might prove to be a profitable one, as the mobile gaming industry continues to develop. The hyper-successful Genshin Impact has already generated nearly $400 million on mobile alone.

Just Cause is popular enough to have its own base of dedicated fans. They are sure to follow the game over to mobile and this new direction opens the door to a new community of gamers as well. All companies, products and brands face the constant challenge of staying relevant. This is especially true for video games. The decision by Square Enix to release a Just Cause mobile game could very well prove to be a wise financial move and begin to chart a new horizon for the action-adventure series.

Just Cause: Mobile will be available for iOS and Android in 2021.
