Kevin Smith Teases Return To Mooby’s In New Clerks 3 Set Photo

Kevin Smith has officially revealed the return of the Mooby’s restaurant in Clerks 3. The filmmaker became an indie icon with his original 1994 film, Clerks, which he followed up 12 years later with Clerks 2 in 2006. Now, Smith is gearing up to take audiences back for another go-around in the Clerks world almost two decades after fans last checked in their favorite New Jersey slackers.

When audiences last visited the Clerks franchise, Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randall (Jeff Anderson) found themselves forced to leave their jobs at Clerks’ Quick Stop locale after a fire caused by Randall forgetting to turn off a coffee pot. This leads them to take jobs at a fast-food restaurant called Mooby’s, an eatery named after a Mickey Mouse-esque anthropomorphic cow owned by a major conglomerate. Mooby’s serves as the sequel’s primary backdrop until Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) provide the money necessary for Dante and Randall to quit and re-open the Quick Stop.

Now, despite the return to the Quick Stop at the end of the last film, Kevin Smith has revealed on Instagram that Mooby’s will return as well. In a recent post, he provided a behind-the-scenes look at the Mooby’s set (originally used as a Mooby’s pop-up in Los Angeles) and confirmed that Rosario Dawson was on-set as Dante’s love interest Becky, a character first introduced in Clerks 2. Mooby has become a familiar sight for many fans of Kevin Smith movies. The corporate mascot made his first appearance in Dogma but has since made subsequent appearances in other View Askewniverse properties such as Clerks: The Animated Series and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. As noted by Smith’s own behind-the-scenes post, Mooby and his fast-food restaurant chain have become so popular among fans of Smith’s work that there have even been real-life pop-up events where fans can go and visit a brick-and-mortar Mooby’s location.

It’s clear that View Askewniverse continues to hold a unique place in Kevin Smith’s heart, but for many of his fans, Clerks 3 is particularly special. Though Jay and Silent Bob have arguably become the most recognizable focal points of Smith’s silver screen shared universe, it’s the Clerks corner of this world with Dante and Randall that truly kicked things off back in 1994. Now, with Rosario Dawson returning as well, fans will see a proper follow-up to Clerks 2 that catches up with these returning characters (and Mooby) as they move into middle age and deal with all of the baggage that comes with it.
