Following his Hawkeye appearance, the first Echo footage reveals details of Vincent D’Onofrio’s return as Kingpin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. D’Onofrio first portrayed the iconic Marvel villain in Netflix’s Daredevil series in 2015. After the positive fan reception of his character in that series, he finally made his MCU debut in 2021’s Hawkeye. Though it was not officially confirmed whether his character was the same Kingpin from Netflix’s Daredevil, he featured as the final big bad and uncle to Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez/Echo.
Echo, a Hawkeye spin-off, was announced in 2021, featuring Cox as the titular antihero. Due to Maya’s complex bond with Kingpin in Hawkeye as well as the Marvel Comics, fans were eager to learn whether her foray into a solo show would include the return of D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, especially after Hawkeye‘s cliffhanger ending in which she shot him and left his fate unknown. Echo set photos revealed earlier this year confirmed the villain’s return, though the circumstances around his appearance are still unknown, but now audiences are getting the exciting first tease of how he’s back.
During the studio’s D23 Expo panel, which Screen Rant attended, Marvel unveiled the first Echo footage. The description from the footage screened at the event reveals details of Kingpin’s return, including the confirmation of his fate within the MCU. Check out the footage description below:
“She gets a fancy brace for her leg and the decoration means warrior, she fights people, intense music plays, she looks at her hands, ends with Kingpin with a patch over his eye and ‘it’s been a long time.'”
Based on the footage description, Kingpin was definitely affected by his final meeting with Maya in Hawkeye, which ended with her shooting him, presumably in the eye as she did in the comics. His statement that “it’s been a long time” seemingly indicates that Echo will pick up a good time after the events of Hawkeye, though it’s not clear what Maya has been doing in the time between each series. Since she hasn’t been interacting with Kingpin, it’s clear that she made good on her Hawkeye finale mission to leave his service and chart her own course, which the footage description seems to signal with her new leg brace.
It’s likely that Echo will venture into Kingpin’s future after Hawkeye as well as his past, since his relationship with Maya must be explored in more depth if he is appearing in her solo series. Regardless of which chapters of Kingpin’s story Echo tells, his appearance in that series will set the stage for his role in Daredevil: Born Again, which will see him reunite with Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock in the official MCU canon after their original Netflix show held loose ties to the franchise. Though audiences have a while to wait for D’Onofrio’s Kingpin to return with Echo‘s Summer 2023 premiere, they can look forward to Daredevil appearing in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which airs Thursdays on Disney+.
