Screen Rant has an exclusive clip from Life Below Zero: Next Generation showcasing survivalist Johnny Rolfe braving the Alaskan wilderness in his hunt for food. Life Below Zero is a documentary television series that follows survivalists and subsistence hunters as they navigate life and the change of seasons in the remote Alaskan wilderness. Life Below Zero: Next Generation is a spinoff of the original series that has aired on National Geographic since 2013.
With a total of 16 seasons, the series has garnered 11 Emmy nominations and 5 total wins. Just last year, the series received its fifth Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography. Rolfe joins the series, which returns January 19 on National Geographic, after realizing that an urban lifestyle just wasn’t for him. Prior to his journey on Life Below Zero, Rolfe lived in Seattle where he worked at a three Michelin star restaurant.
Our exclusive clip previews Rolfe’s upcoming journey, and finds Rolfe in the Yukon Flats searching for food. In the clip, Rolfe recounts how a book from his early childhood drew him to Alaska. Rolfe follows a grizzly bear’s tracks and eventually stumbles on a wolf’s trail before hitting the river he is looking for. While Rolfe doesn’t find food, he remains undeterred and expresses excitement for his journey:

Rolfe gushes over the environment, his personal investment and excitement in being there clear, having been drawn to the northernmost state since he was just eight years old. Rolfe’s narration describes the beautiful landscape and treacherous activities that come with living life off the grid. Rolfe is already an avid hunter and fisherman, but new challenges await him as he spends his first winter in the Yukon Flats alone.
The clip is a thrilling look at the upcoming show. While Rolfe is looking for food he runs into the grizzly bear and wolf tracks, showing that the danger is looming just around the corner. Predators are just one of the harsh realities that Rolfe and the cast of Life Below Zero: Next Generation will face when the show premieres with the Alaskan winter looming and the uncharted landscape presenting unexpected surprises everyday.
