Looney Tunes: 10 Marvin The Martian Cosplay That Are Too Good

Marvin the Martian, the little man from Mars created in 1948, is a brilliant case of how far-reaching human creativity is. Ironically, it would be hard to explain how Marvin’s image came together to an actual extraterrestrial visitor. His armor is a reference to the Roman god Mars, after which the planet is named. But, the ant-like face, the tennis shoes, the white gloves… well, he definitely has the post-modernist look.

Aside from all this college talk, it is understandable that such a whimsical character has had an enduring fan base for more than seventy years. Sure, he may only be remembered after Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck, but creating a Marvin-based cosplay, for example, is a lot more fun than dressing up as a rabbit or a duck. And, unsurprisingly, many people do cosplay as Marvin.

There is a good demonstrator of Marvin’s international appeal on Earth: this cosplay came all the way from Australia. The cosplay fan sconderson captured his fellow enthusiast kayoby_x showing off a very accurate costume at Sydney Supanova 2018. A helmet made of an old bike hat? Or maybe the addition of a dust broom bottom to give a Gladiator feel to it? Checks both boxes. Amazingly, though, that is very in tune with how the character actually is portrayed, so the final result was pretty neat.

This one is a little more cartoony, but he is, after all, a cartoon character. Using all this cardboard to make the helmet and the skirt, along with some really fluffy glove hands and gun, definitely made steve.v.photography stand out in the crowd. Of course, the good old broom out of the helmet trick is there to make the whole costume shine.

It is hard to imagine someone going to the Otaku Fest 2019 and not noticing jokerextreme36’s take on Marvin. He was somewhat daring, for sure; instead of the traditional Roman skirt, he’s sporting a green fanny pack. Instead of the red shirt, he’s wearing red overalls, and, just to make sure no one would confuse him for someone else, he’s got a big “Mars” flag, ready to be deployed on our planet. Hats off to the nicely made helmet, the first one so far with no real broom!

Cosplay is an art very closely related to makeup, and Marvin’s portrayal by taylor_rodmkp shows exactly that. The gun is identical to the one from the cartoons, and the whole helmet seems to be created with cardboard, including the broom. The colors are also completely accurate.

What makes the whole ensemble different, however, is the absence of a mouthless cartoony face. In its place, a feminine alien looks at the camera with some very alien eyes. Extra points for creativity.

After bernardo.m.luz visited the Comic-Con Experience 2019 in São Paulo, he posted pictures of many of the great cosplays he has witnessed in the event. One of them was the Marvin one by cosplaynostalgico. Instead of cardboard, this one was created using polycarbonate, resulting in a more durable costume that could—and would end up being—used more than once.

Another art form that is never too far away from cosplays is photography. The photographer jesse13mason dressed up in a spookily accurate costume of Marvin, and ladyashexii took this beautiful shot. Sure, the gloved hands make it impossible to actually pull the trigger of the ray gun. Still, the helmet, the shirt, the face… everything says it: this one was crafted carefully.

Though he’s frequently seen toting a blaster of some sort, Martians don’t always need to rely on conventional weaponry, and this amazing cosplay of Marvin proves that. It was captured by tough_meat, but the creator of the costume remains to be discovered (although kujoprime also caught sight of it).

With a head made out of plush, the whole look might be more inviting to hugs, but don’t get fooled! Marvin still has a bomb, and his facial expression can’t deny it: he is here for Earth domination.

3 ivycosplay

A dedicated cosplayer, ivycosplay’s Marvin is a good example of how to make a costume similar to the original character while leaving some space for showing the person in the costume. The helmet spared the use of any real broom; instead, it was made to look really authentic and metallic. The shoes and the skirt also complement the whole look with Marvin’s main symbols.

2 merecopeland

A red onesie, a Marvin knitted cap, a styrofoam skirt and… voilà! Marvin is alive! The young merecopeland created a very original costume for Halloween 2020, and the fact that she is wearing a protective mask is even in line with the character; he never had a mouth anyway. This one is great as a reminder of what truly makes a good costume—it is all about dedication to the character.

With an Instagram account dedicated to his Mr. Freeze cosplays, bretzels.empire could not hide his fatherly pride. After seeing his baby’s amazingly cute Marvin cosplay at Comicpalooza 2018 being shared by cosplayzine, an international Cosplay magazine, he had to share it too. Who could not share it? There is just something too endearing about the little Martian, and this toddler definitely gets it.
