Marvel World Of Heroes AR Game Coming From Pokémon GO Developer

Disney has announced Marvel World of Heroes, a new mobile AR game developed by the creators of Pokémon Go featuring heroes and villains from Marvel Comics. The fact that Pokémon Go has made billions of dollars has led other companies to adopt its formula, but the mobile AR game formula isn’t a guaranteed recipe for success.

Pokémon Go has been a huge success since launch, to the point where it has influenced the direction of the franchise itself. This meant that other mobile AR games connected to a big franchise would soon follow, with titles like Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and Garfield Go using the same formula. These franchises lacked the appeal of encountering Pokémon in the wild, which is why they have mostly died out, though the pandemic also played its part in destroying games that had their appeal tied to going outside. This was the reason given for Minecraft Earth closing after two years, even with the strength of the Minecraft brand behind it.

The next attempt to bind the Pokémon Go formula to a big franchise has been announced. It was revealed during the Disney/Marvel Games Showcase that Pokémon Go developer Niantic is working on Marvel World of Heroes, a new mobile AR game set to launch in 2023 that involves heroes and villains from the Marvel franchise. A teaser trailer for Marvel World of Heroes has been uploaded to the official Niantic YouTube channel, and people can pre-register their interest on the official Marvel World of Heroes website.

Marvel World Of Heroes Is A New Take On The AR Formula

There is no shortage of Marvel mobile video games on the market, but the Marvel World of Heroes teaser lacked any gameplay footage. However, the official PR for the game has revealed some details about its gameplay. Marvel World of Heroes lets players create their own heroes and fight enemies by patrolling their neighborhood, which includes facing interdimensional threats. Players can unlock equipment and powers as they level up, which can be used to tailor their hero. Marvel World of Heroes lets players team up with iconic Marvel heroes, including Captain America, Iron Man, and Spider-Man, as they face famous villains in a battle to save the multiverse.

Marvel World of Heroes is another attempt at catching the Pokémon Go lightning in a bottle, but the license is certainly suited to this kind of mobile AR game. There are lots of Marvel heroes and villains that can be used to provide content for the game over a long period of time, and it can have crossovers with other upcoming Marvel video games too. The lack of gameplay footage means that it’s difficult to predict Marvel World of Heroes‘long-term prospects, but at least it’s being made by the best studio in the business when it comes to this type of game.
