Marvel’s Oddest Mutants Reunite In X-Statix Revival First Look

One of the oddest mutant teams who are the complete antithesis of what a superhero squad should be, the X-Statix, are making a comeback in this first look at their new revival comic. The X-Statix were a team of celebrity superheroes who used their mutant powers for the sole purpose of getting famous. While they did occasionally save the day, the X-Statix always made sure the cameras were rolling when they would do so and then recreate that heroic moment to make movies and sell merchandise. In the first look at the X-Statix revival, the mutant celebrities are seemingly being replaced by an all-new team of famous mutant heroes: the X-Cellent.

The conception of the X-Statix being a team of profitable superheroes began when the group was still under the name X-Force. Under the leadership of Zeitgeist, the X-Force were approached by a big-shot businessman who wanted to trademark the classic X-Men affiliated name, making the team rich and famous in the process. When the deal was done, using the name X-Force got some push-back so they decided to rebrand and become the X-Statix, a team that remained famous for a time after the name change but one that quickly sank into obscurity.

In a Marvel Comics preview posted in an exclusive by comics news site AIPT Comics, the first few pages of the new title X-Cellent #1 was published. The new series following the continued adventures of the X-Statix is written by Peter Milligan with art by Mike Allred with Laura Allred as the colorist and Nate Piekos as letterer. “I’m thoroughly X-Statix to be working with Mike and Laura Allred again,” said Milligan speaking to his excitement for the project in an interview published by AIPT Comics, “and it’s been truly X-Cellent to discover that we’ve lost none of our alchemical fizz in conjuring up this new comic, this new title, this new beginning: the X-Cellent!” Milligan wasn’t the only one excited for the new book as artist Mike Allred shared the writer’s sentiment, “The ol’ gang is back together again! Working with Peter Milligan is always a party”.

In the first few pages of the X-Cellent #1 released by Marvel Comics, the celebrity mutant team rivaling the now outdated X-Statix is in the process of filming the X-Men spinoff television show for a channel dedicated to superhero movies and shows based on the real thing. In the middle of filming, the leader of the X-Statix, Zeitgeist, starts a live stream on his social media account in an effort to retain relevancy and gain more fans and followers, an effort that seems to be working as his followers were slugged somewhere in hundreds of millions in the context of the story. While the X-Cellent are using the momentum they have to make the latest and greatest piece of mutant superhero media that seems to be based on an X-Statix adventure, the real X-Statix could be making a comeback.

The history of the X-Statix team in Marvel Comics is a little choppy as Zeitgeist was believed to have died in an event known as the Boyz ‘R Us Massacre, but based on the all-new X-Cellent title, it seems as though this will be a new beginning for both the X-Statix and the titular team as they fight it out for the top spot of name recognition and popularity. Marvel’s oddest mutants reunite in this first look at an X-Statix revival series that looks as though it will depict the team regaining their long-lost popularity. X-Cellent #1 will be available on February 2, 2022.
