Matrix 4: Why Neo Doesn’t Remember Who He Is In Resurrections

The first footage and trailer for the upcoming The Matrix: Resurrections shows that Neo no longer has any memory of who he was or what he did previously, raising big questions as to what happened to make him forget. From the few snippets available, it’s clear that the new movie will include iconic characters from the original trilogy, including Neo and Trinity. However, the nature of their returns, and whether they’ll be the same as they were before, is very much uncertain.

The first Matrix 4 footage and trailer debuted at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on August 24, 2021. The teaser features Keanu Reeves as “Thomas”,  talking to a therapist played by Neil Patrick Harris about a series of vivid dreams. He explains that they feel more like memories before the footage reveals a collection of classic scenes from the first three Matrix movies. Also included is a shot of Neo appearing to walk through a mirror, reuniting with Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity in a cafe, and being offered a red pill by a mysterious character who some believe to be a Young Morpheus. There are also several spectacular-sounding all-new action set pieces for audiences to savor. But, despite all the excitement, the clip poses some serious questions – particularly concerning Neo’s memory.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

There are several reasons why Neo might not remember who he is in The Matrix 4. Viewers know, for instance, from the events of the first Matrix movie, that anyone plugged into the Matrix has no concept of the “real” world until they are reawakened. It’s also known that it’s possible for people to be reinserted into the system and have their memories wiped, thanks to Cypher’s detailed explanation of his deal with the Agents. Therefore, if Neo was plugged back into the Matrix by the machines, they could feasibly have erased all memory of who he really is.

Another key question, that this theory doesn’t address, is how characters that seemed to die during the original trilogy might have returned in The Matrix 4. One possibility is that Neo wasn’t actually killed during the ending of Matrix: Revolutions and that the machines found a way to keep him alive after his epic battle against Agent Smith. After all, Neo’s final appearance sees him slowly taken away by machines without any confirmation over whether he perished. If this is the case, it would also explain how they were able to reinsert his body into the Matrix and wipe his memory prior to this new film.

The return of Neo’s “Thomas Anderson” alter ego certainly implies that he has been reassimilated into the Matrix. Other clues from the new footage, such as the character’s supposedly mundane life in a near-future San Francisco, strongly echo the set-up from the original 1999 Matrix movie. Whatever the answer, it seems like audiences won’t get anything concrete until another trailer or the film itself finally arrives. With the tantalizing possibilities provided by this new footage, however, it seems likely that The Matrix: Resurrections will force viewers to reassess what they thought they knew about the original trilogy.
