Matt Smith Is Confused By His Morbius Villain Character

Matt Smith has called it “a bit confusing” to play his mysterious character in Sony’s Morbius. Morbius stars House of Gucci’s Jared Leto as the Marvel comics antihero Dr. Michael Morbius introduced initially as an adversary of Spider-Man. The medical expert finds himself transformed into a vampire-like creature while searching for a cure for his rare blood disease.

Smith, famous for his roles in Doctor Who and The Crown and recent movies like Last Night In Soho, plays the film’s primary antagonist. A mysterious part, the character was initially listed online as Loxias Crown- a minor comics villain and enemy of Morbius after being attacked by the living vampire and bitten. The bite leaves Crown with similar powers and blood-thirsty appetite to Morbius, transforming him into the evil Hunger.

Speaking exclusively to Screen Rant, Smith has discussed his role’s contradictory and convoluted nature in Morbius. The actor admits that he wasn’t “aware” of the character’s comics history and didn’t explore it because the script “doesn’t really delve into the past of him.” As well as implying there may be more than one version of Crown in the film by joking “Isn’t someone else playing him?” Smith states, “It’s all a bit confusing to me.” The British star adds that it’s “all a bit odd whether it was Loxias or not,” keeping the role’s secrecy alive. Read the full interview quote below:

“The truth is, I wasn’t aware of the great big history of the character in many respects. Because the script I was presented with doesn’t really delve into the past of him – or indeed the future. And isn’t someone else playing him? It’s all a bit confusing to me, to be honest with you. I took as my Bible just the actual script, is the honest truth of it. And it was all a bit odd whether it was Loxias [Crown] or not. I’m still not quite sure, to be honest. “

The British actor is no stranger to fantasy worlds and is set to join the mythical world of Westeros in HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon, which focuses on the Targaryen dynasty. He was also close to securing a role in Star Wars Episode 9, with many assuming he was to play a young Palpatine, but his character was ultimately cut from the finished film. Rumors also abound that Smith may return to his breakout role in Doctor Who for the show’s upcoming 60th-anniversary special, alongside David Tennant and Peter Capaldi.

The actor is never one to hold back, and it’s clear that he is just as unaware as many general audiences about the history of a character like Loxias Crown in the marvel universe. Whether or not he is playing such a role remains uncertain, but the actor is a welcome addition to Sony’s intriguing Spider-verse movies. The answers remain to be seen as Leto’s Morbius finally comes to theaters after years of pandemic-related delays. Morbius opens in theaters on April 1st.
