MCU: 5 Times Scarlet Witch Wasn’t In Control Of Her Powers (& 5 She Totally Was)

Wanda Maximoff (aka the Scarlet Witch), is quickly becoming recognized by fans as one of the strongest Avengers currently in the MCU. Throughout her journey, not only have her powers grown exponentially but she’s also developed new ones, mostly highlighted in her show WandaVision.

Even though her powers are growing, the one thing she hasn’t been able to advance too much is her control over her powers. There are multiple occasions throughout her time in the MCU where she releases her power unintentionally, most of the time due to her emotions, mostly grief, taking temporary control.

10 Wasn’t: Losing her Brother

When Wanda was introduced in Age of Ultron, it’s clear that she has a deep connection to her twin brother, Pietro Maximoff (A.K.A. Quicksilver). Due to their relationship, she was able to create a sort of psychic bond between the two of them, which managed to make them even closer, (and is why when Pietro is killed off, she can tell instantly).

In a moment of despair, Wanda drops to her knees to mourn the loss of her twin while also releasing a large blast of telekinetic energy that manages to completely dust away all surrounding robots. While this was a chance for fans to see the strength of Wanda’s powers, it was also the first time fans saw that Wanda isn’t always in control of what she’s doing.

9 Was: Battle of Wakanda

Infinity War was one of the first movies that gave Wanda Maximoff a chance to fully flex her abilities and strength. While Wanda is protecting Vision at the beginning of the Battle of Wakanda, she later makes her grand entrance when she notices large drill-like vehicles wiping out the defense.

After coming down, wiping the drills out, and killing Proxima Midnight, she is forced to then go over to Vision and destroy the Mind Stone while simultaneously holding off Thanos. In these scenes, fans get to not only see Wanda at her strongest but with full control over her powers and emotions.

8 Wasn’t: Agatha’s Nightmare

One of Wanda’s less-known powers is her ability to get into an enemy’s mind and make them see what they fear the most. She uses it in Age of Ultron and manages to take almost all of the Avengers out of commission, so naturally in her fight with Agatha, she attempts it again.

While, at first, she has control and is scaring Agatha, she quickly loses the reins and Agatha twists the nightmare towards Wanda. It’s at this moment that Wanda loses the control she has and becomes the victim to the nightmare that she initially created. While she is still able to eventually get out, for that bit of time, she lets her fear overtake her control and lets Agatha manipulate her way in charge.

7 Was: Fighting Thanos

After Wanda was able to hold off Thanos for a brief time in Infinity War, fans were quick to point out that she was the only one able to do so (even though Thanos had five out of the six infinity stones). This led fans to look forward to their next interaction, which Endgame was more than happy to provide.

While chasing after the infinity gauntlet, Wanda manages to completely humiliate Thanos in their showdown, breaking his sword, lifting him in the air, and stripping him of his armor. The only reason Thanos was able to walk away from this encounter is because he rained fire down from his ship, hitting Wanda and sending her flying away while also hitting his own army.

6 Wasn’t: Choking The Residents Of Westview

Many of the events of WandaVision are somewhat out of Wanda’s control. Although fans initially believed a villain was behind the creation of Westview, they were soon surprised to discover Wanda was responsible for it all. However, it is very clear that she doesn’t always have full control over what happened and what she does. When confronted by the residents of Westview without her mind control in place for the first time, she quickly becomes overwhelmed.

She finally screams for them to stop, accidentally unleashing her powers and sending tendrils of telekinetic energy that start to choke the surrounding people. Realizing her mistake, she quickly stops it but, at that moment, she didn’t have a full grasp of her powers and let go, harming innocent people.

5 Was: Closing Westview

Once Wanda realized that Westview was not the haven for people she originally thought it was, she decided at that moment she would do whatever she needed to so the residents could be free. Her first attempt is stopped when she realizes that she would be killing off Vision and the twins by closing the Hex.

Waiting until after the fight in the final episode, she goes home with Vision and tucks the twins into bed, all while closing the Hex. This time, however, she does it differently and finds a way to slowly close it so that the twins and Vision don’t feel pain, but instead just fade away when the time comes, and the borders of the Hex pass them.

4 Wasn’t: Pregnant With The Twins

Baby fever takes a whole new meaning in Episode 2 of WandaVision when Wanda conjures up a pregnancy after spending the episode setting up and participating in a talent show for children. Throughout the episode, there are multiple moments that the residents of Westview will say “For The Children” in unison, hinting at Wanda’s subconscious desire to have kids of her own.

At the end of the episode, Wanda and Vision are talking to one another when all of a sudden, Wanda’s stomach grows and she becomes very pregnant, even though she didn’t intentionally do it. In the next episode, her pregnancy rapidly progresses, and she subconsciously speeds everything up and gives birth to the twins.

3 Was: Fighting Agatha

The final fight in Wandavision between the two witches, Wanda and Agatha, started and it looked like Agatha and her leaching powers would easily beat Wanda. It also looked like Wanda was losing her control a little bit, considering she kept shooting off blasts either missing Agatha completely or hitting her, knowing full well anytime it hits Agatha, she ended up taking the power right from Wanda.

However, after a few moments, it becomes clear that the hits were a distraction and the other blasts was actually Wanda creating runes so that Agatha could no longer cast a spell. This showed that Wanda was aware of everything she was doing and was actively working to create runes while keeping Agatha too busy to notice.

2 Wasn’t: Creating Westview and the New Vision

One of Wanda’s biggest regrets in WandaVision is trapping and essentially torturing the residents of Westview after creating the Hex. However, it’s made clear to fans that it was in no way intentional. After seeing Vision’s corpse being ripped apart for scrap metal, at least as far as she can tell, she goes to the plot of land that he purchased for their new life.

While there, she unleashes her power unlike any time before, using the remnants of the Mind Stone inside of her. It becomes clear that she figures it out, but at that moment. she had no intention of creating Vision or the Hex. She had just lost control over her emotions.

1 Was: Reading the Darkhold

The after-credit scene gave viewers a glimpse of the new Wanda after fully accepting her place as the Scarlet Witch. At this moment, she is essentially resting in a remote cabin while also reading the Darkhold and learning more about who she is and her powers.

This moment is important though since she isn’t asleep and astral projecting, but is instead wide awake while making another physical entity that is reading over the Darkhold. It’s in this moment that not only can fans see Wanda fully accepting her place as The Scarlet Witch and her power, but it’s a chance to see that she may be stronger than Dr. Strange, who is only able to astral project a non-physical entity.
