Baby Driverintroduces its very own version of Bonnie and Clyde with Eiza Gonzalez’s Darling and Jon Hamm’s Buddy. The two stars alongside a group of bank robbers spearheaded by their mysterious leader Doc (Kevin Spacey), the gun-slinging badass Bats (Jamie Fox) and their musically driven getaway driver, Baby (Ansel Elgort).
The Edgar Wright directed and written action comedy film centers on Baby — a young musically inclined driver who works for a group of gang members whose primary cash cow is robbing banks. Suffering from tinnitus, he turns to music to help him cope with constant ringing in his ears. Discovering that music heightens his senses and reflexes, he eventually utilizes his personally made playlist to time every turn, stop, and gear shift to help his cohorts make their daring escape. This, in turn, earns him Doc’s most trusted getaway driver badge.
The short featurette, highlights the romantic criminal duo of Darling and Buddy who appear very compatible with each other — both in style and vibe. At one point González describes their characters by saying “He’s the gun and she’s the trigger.”
Hamm and González do the whole happy-go-lucky and crazy-in-love routine all too well. They can be over-the-top with their PDA, and even Bats gets annoyed at the non-stop flirting, but when the time comes to get down to business, the two appear to be very capable criminals.
With Baby Driver‘s impressive ensemble cast, it is difficult to not root for this ragtag team of criminals. And the clever incorporation of music into the narrative makes this film very interesting. We’ve seen films driven by soundtracks in the last couple of years with standouts like James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, as well as, the decorated La La Land by Damien Chazelle. But Wright is able to deeply embed the importance of music in Baby Driver‘s narrative in a new and interesting way.
Sony has been relentless in marketing the film, making sure that it’ll get as much exposure as necessary before its premiere. The premise is very creative and the cast is stellar, so it has all the potential to standout from the usual franchise fare of the summer. So far, early screenings for the movie have been met with positive feedback from critics, so hopefully word-of-mouth will help Baby Driver get the attention it deserves.
