Miss Congeniality 2 Shouldn’t Have Happened, Says Sandra Bullock

Star Sandra Bullock says Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous shouldn’t have happened, but has a reason for not regretting making the sequel. The 2005 comedy picks up sometime after the events of the first Miss Congeniality as Bullock’s FBI Agent Gracie Hart is struggling to adjust to life as the new face of the agency, going on a press tour across the country with new partner, Sam Fuller. When her friends, Cheryl Frasier and Stan Fields, are kidnapped, Hart must return to her undercover roots in Las Vegas, Nevada to save them with Sam’s help.

Bullock returned to produce and lead the cast of Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous alongside fellow returnees William Shatner, Ernie Hudson and Heather Burns and franchise newcomers Regina King, Enrique Murciano, Diedrich Bader, Vic Chao, Treat Williams, Nick Offerman and Stephen Tobolowsky. Once again written by Marc Lawrence and helmed by The Santa Clause‘s John Pasquin, the film hit theaters to largely negative reviews from critics and audiences alike for its underwhelming humor and lackluster story, with many deeming it unnecessary. Despite the poor reviews, Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous was a modest box office success, grossing over $101 million against its $45 million budget.

While speaking with Metro for her new rom-com The Lost City, Sandra Bullock reflected on the highs and lows of her 35-year career. When looking back at Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, the actress/producer expressed a feeling that the sequel shouldn’t have happened but shared he reason for not completely regretting it. See what Bullock said below:

“Two shouldn’t have been done but I’m glad that it did because of Regina, who I just freaking adore. That one should have remained a one-off.”

Bullock isn’t the only one to feel that Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous shouldn’t have happened if to look at its Rotten Tomatoes score of 15 percent from critics. Though the first film netted Bullock her second Golden Globe nomination after the well-received rom-com While You Were Sleeping, it wasn’t much of a hit with critics either as reviews commended the actress for her performance but deemed the film no better than a sitcom with an unoriginal script. If the first Miss Congeniality hadn’t grossed over $212 million against its $45 million budget, the sequel likely wouldn’t have gotten off the ground.

Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous isn’t the only movie Sandra Bullock has looked back on with distaste, having recently expressed a regret in starring in Speed 2: Cruise Control. Despite a few bumpy steps in her filmography around the time of both sequels, Bullock has enjoyed a steady resurgence in recent years with Netflix’s hit Bird Box and The Unforgivable adaptations, though the latter’s success stemmed from its viewership over its reviews. Bullock’s latest success, the adventure rom-com The Lost City, can be seen in theaters now.
