Moon Knight’s Most Brutal Moment Gets Ironic Twist in Body Paint Fan Art

As he’s pointed out many times, Moon Knight isn’t a traditional Marvel hero, often opting for truly grim tactics in service of his vengeful god. The darkest of those moments was so brutal it’s become an unshakable part of Marc Spector’s lore, even as he’s tried to grow past it, and it gets an ironic twist in a recent piece of body paint fan art.

In 2006’s Moon Knight #2, Moon Knight battles his former ally and longtime nemesis Raoul Bushman – a mercenary who was responsible for Marc’s first death and his rebirth as a priest of the moon god Khonshu. Despite seeing help on the way, Moon Knight is so exhausted by his endless battle with Bushman that he goes further than ever before, removing the villain’s face in a delirious tribute to his divine patron. The moment has followed Moon Knight ever since, and now a new piece of body paint fan art flips the script.

The art in question comes from Melissa Croft, a body paint artist who often creates cosplays of movie, game, and comic characters. Croft’s selections vary from the mainstream to the truly niche, from Wonder Woman to X-Men’s futuristic warrior Rasputin IV, and are totally self-applied. That latter fact is incredibly impressive in a new piece of fan art, in which Croft recreates Gabriele Dell’Otto’s variant cover to 2021’s Moon Knight #1 on her own face, with a pure white eye recreating the moon itself, struck through by Marc’s cape. It’s a jaw-droppingly exact recreation formed from eyeliner, eyeshadow, and lipstick, and a grimly funny tribute to a hero who is known to many for taking faces, not appearing on them.

Since that grisly moment, Moon Knight has moved on, reaching his nadir after helping Khonshu defeat the Avengers and conquer Earth as part of his war against the devilish Mephisto. While he was offered redemption via Avengers membership soon after, Moon Knight declined, and has instead chosen to directly protect those who travel by night through his Midnight Mission, carrying on his religious duties while shunning his god. While Marc Spector is far more of a hero in his current comics – even preventing ally Hunter’s Moon from killing innocent vampires – he’s not afraid to use his sadistic past to intimidate enemies.

Unfortunately, that tactic won’t work against current villain Zodiac, who so admires Moon Knight’s darkest moment that he’s been tempting him to give in to his inner darkness and recreate it. Hopefully, Marc Spector holds out to remain a hero, though as Gabriele Dell’Otto’s art and Melissa’s Croft skillful recreation acknowledge, even a less vengeful Moon Knight is still one who tends to end the night wearing as much red as he does white.
