Mortal Kombat 12 Leaks Suggest Massive But Disappointing Roster

A new leak regarding Mortal Kombat 12 alleges the title will basically function as a MK11 re-release with a roster featuring fighters from MK9 and MKX. The crew at developer NetherRealm Studios announced an end to MK11 support this past July, following two-plus years of post-launch support on the project. Scant details were offered, though a post from Mortal Kombat’s social media pages noted the studio had shifted focus to something new. While fans, and NetherRealm’s production history, thus far, suggested Injustice 3 would officially enter development, rumors claim the Chicago-based group is actually hard at work on Mortal Kombat 12.

In August, VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb mentioned the likelihood of the next Mortal Kombat installment arriving ahead of Injustice 3, given MK11’s incredible success and uncertainty about the future of Warner Bros.’ gaming division. Not too long thereafter, Warner Media job listings possibly hinting at MK12 were posted online, providing further credence to the ongoing rumors and speculation. But new leaks, should they prove accurate, indicate the next entry in the long-running series may not amount to what MK faithful hope to see.

Twitter user Ska’Vorah shared a screenshot of a 4chan post in which someone alleges NetherRealm laid off 14 people after deploying MK11: Ultimate Edition earlier this year. The supposed former employee claimed Mortal Kombat 12 will launch as little more than an MK11 re-release, with characters from MK9 and MKX packed in – barring Cyber Sub-Zero and Triborg. Allegedly, Kombat Pack 3 for Mortal Kombat 11 was in the works at one point; its characters – Ermac, Harley Quinn, and Takeda – will appear will appear in the twelfth mainline installment. Finally, the game could be announced as early as December 9, the 4chan user added, the same date as The Game Awards 2021.

While Twitter user judge_arts correctly notes the above information corresponds with previous rumors, said rumors also stem from a dubious source – a Reddit thread wherein someone outs their signficant other’s work-related details as revenge for infidelity. Needless to say, such information should not be taken at face value.

Mortal Kombat 11 hit store shelves in early 2019 and now counts among the best-selling entries in the series at over 12 million copies sold worldwide. NetherRealm’s support for the title consisted of several post-launch updates, including two Kombat Packs that invited the likes of Terminator, RoboCop, Spawn, and The Joker into the arena.

Mortal Kombat 12 has yet to receive a formal announcement from NetherRealm Studios and WBIE.
