Netflix’s Manifest: 10 Unpopular Opinions About The Show, According To Reddit

The passengers and those around them have gone through countless twists and turns on Netflix’s Manifest. Things have become increasingly challenging and chaotic for the characters who have had to make some difficult decisions since the arrival of the enigmatic Montego Air Flight 828.

Some of the passengers’ choices, along with those caught up in the aftermath of the plane’s disappearance, have been controversial, which is why it’s not surprising that the show has stirred up several discussions on platforms like Reddit. With Manifest’s renewed popularity, more unpopular opinions from the fandom have sparked debates about different aspects of the series.

They Should Focus More On The Plane

Manifest is a TV series centered around an airplane and its mysterious disappearance. According to cactusvine, the show doesn’t emphasize this central aspect enough. They wish there would be “more focus on the plane mystery than the personal relationships.”

Viewers who have watched the series all the way to season 3 will understand that it’s less about the plane itself and more about how the main characters deal with their new normal. It’s precisely the personal relationships and the passengers’ struggles with the Callings and their families that make it compelling to watch. What’s more, revealing too much about the plane would mean having to end the show early, which most fans likely wouldn’t want.

Mick And Jared Are Better Together

Mick’s love triangle involving Jared and Zeke has always been a source of contention in the fandom. One Redditor voices their own thoughts on this matter, warning others that “this may be an unpopular opinion,” but they like Mick and Jared’s relationship better than Mick and Zeke’s.

The majority of fans would agree that Zeke has grown on them over the seasons. He’s proven himself to be loyal and fearless, willing to do anything for Mick and her family, even at the cost of his own life. While Jared is an impressive police officer, he’s more of a remnant of Mick’s past than anything else. Things get complicated when Jared is involved and he tends to be hot-headed and rash, which is not something Mick needs in her already tumultuous life.

Saanvi Is Annoying

For most viewers, Saanvi is one of Manifest‘s most likable characters. Redditor nicolemazahreh doesn’t agree with the general consensus, though, stating that the medical researcher is “lowkey annoying” because “she doesn’t listen to anyone and does whatever she wants.”

The fact that Saanvi doesn’t listen to people around her is exactly what makes her so special. If she had listened to Vance and Dr. Gupta in Eureka, they would have never returned Noah’s ark or the tailfin to their rightful places. Her unwavering determination to help the passengers by finding a way to beat the Death Date is more admirable than annoying.

Mick And Zeke Have No Chemistry

Mick and Zeke have been through a lot together, but leixo18_4 isn’t satisfied by what they’ve seen from the pair so far. According to the user, “Michaela and Zeke have no chemistry,” as it’s only during “the one hug they shared” in season 2 that they felt “any sort of chemistry between them.”

There’s no denying that Mick and Zeke’s romance is unique because of its inextricable link to the Callings. This uniqueness is what makes it such a great partnership, as the two of them understand each other in ways no one else can (not even Jared). There has definitely been more than a hug on the show and with Zeke’s new empathy ability, he’s more attuned to Mick’s feelings than anyone has ever been.

Manifest’s Characters Are Overdramatic

The Redditor soandso90 isn’t too happy about how most of the characters are portrayed on the show. They express how “almost every character act like a moody, over-dramatic teenager,” with everyone constantly “arguing about silly crap” and “keeping secrets from one another.”

While it’s understandable that some viewers would feel frustrated over some characters’ reactions on the show, it’s easy to forget that these “over-dramatic” behaviors are actually acceptable responses to their absurd circumstances. Of course, Grace would be perplexed by her husband and son’s strange visions, Ben would be terrified of losing his son, Saanvi would keep her unintentional murder of the Major a secret, and more. They’re simply doing the best they can as humans under strange and stressful situations.

Jared Is Too Clingy

Jared tends to be a polarizing figure in the fandom, with some fans like Klover1998 disliking how he “has been super clingy.” They continue by pointing out how he’s not sad over losing his wife because he cheated on her, questioning where “his morals” are.

They’re likely referring to Jared being “super clingy” with Mick, in this case. Most viewers would agree that his reaction to losing her is understandable, considering their complicated history together. He likely expected that they would be together after he cheated on his wife with her, but was disappointed to learn about Zeke. While that’s still a poor choice, it makes sense that Jared would be overprotective of Mick. He even mentions at one point that he’d rather be her friend than nothing at all.

Zeke Should’ve Died

The tense build-up to Zeke’s Death Date and the characters’ attempts at stopping it is one of the most gripping storylines on the show. According to OmairZain, it ended wrong because reviving him “made teasing the whole beating the [Death Date] all the season lame.”

Most fans would likely be quick to point out that if Zeke had died then, other passengers would never figure out that there is a way to beat the Death Date. He worked for and deserved his redemption. His resurrection also gives hope to the other passengers and answers a lot of questions about how they can save the Lifeboat. Plus, he’s one of the best characters on Manifest and it would be a shame not to see his relationship with Mick develop further.

Jared Should’ve Gone Rogue

Jared’s sneaky infiltration of an anti-828 hate group to destroy it from within is one of the best plotlines from the show. The twist about his undercover operation didn’t impress piglet110419, though, as they wanted “Jared to be rogue” since “it would make for more of a story.”

Audiences would agree that not only was that storyline especially entertaining because of the fact that Jared was undercover (even from the viewers) but also that it would be totally uncharacteristic of the police officer to betray both his precinct and Mick. He’s always been portrayed as a loyal character, to Mick first and then to his job. He’s too smart to fall for anti-828 propaganda.

Ben Is The Worst

Ben is often considered one of the best Flight 828 passengers in Manifest because he works tirelessly to keep the Lifeboat afloat. The Redditor nickles1234 doesn’t agree with most fans, though, remarking how they “can’t decide who is worse” between him and Jared. They complain that “Ben thinks he knows better than everyone else.”

Based on the events of the series and Ben’s extensive research into the plane’s disappearance, it’s highly likely that he does know better than most, if not everyone else in the show. He’s been trying to figure out the Callings with Saanvi and Vance from the beginning, using logic, mythology, history, and more to solve every mystery. He’s usually the key to interpreting not only his own Callings but also other passengers’ visions.

The Show Is Too Cheesy

According to Pop-lover-123, “the acting in” Manifest is “kinda bad.” They can’t stand how “it’s starting to get really cheesy,” describing some aspects of the series as “very cliche and corny.”

While the acting and writing for the show are not perfect, they’re definitely far from bad. It’s obvious that the members of the cast really understand their characters well and it shows with their convincing acting. The series has shocking revelations and twists, which is why some may perceive the characters’ reactions as “cheesy” or “corny.” That said, most would agree that even Manifest‘s most dramatic scenes are reasonable depictions of nerve-wracking situations, not to mention they’re almost always highly entertaining.
