New Blood Actor Hopes Angel Learns the Truth About Dexter

Dexter: New Blood actor David Zayas hopes that Angel Batista will find out who Dexter Morgan truly is. The latest episode of the continuation series brought back Batista in a surprising fashion, giving a police conference in the same hotel that Angela Bishop is investigating the disappearance of Matt Caldwell. Bishop happens to stumble in on the convention and when talking to Batista privately, she realizes the connection he has to Dexter, whom she has known as Jim Lindsay, and that he is not who he says he is. This is confirmed by her daughter, Audrey, when she talks about Harrison’s intoxicated reveal about Dexter at the party in Dexter: New Blood episode 5.

Batista was a main character from the original series during Dexter’s days as a blood spatter analyst at the Miami Metro Police Department. He was known for being a friend to Dexter as well as his romantic relationship with his superior Maria LaGuerta. He spent most of the series as a homicide sergeant before being upgraded to lieutenant in the final season. It has been revealed in New Blood that he is been promoted to Captain of Miami Metro, hence his appearance at the conference.

Now in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zayas hopes that Angel Batista will find out the truth about Dexter Morgan and his real identity, now that he has reappeared in the revival. Throughout the original series, Batista was oblivious to Dexter being a serial killer, despite other detectives like LaGuerta, Joey Quinn, and James Doakes suspecting him as such. He has also went on to defend Dexter on numerous occasions against judgment. Zayas’ full statement to Batista finding out about Dexter can be read below:

“That’s a difficult question to answer, but I guess I’m going to say that ultimately truth is going to set you free. So I would say yes.”

The closest Batista came to ever finding out about who Dexter really is was in the series finale when he and Quinn were watching a tape of Dexter killing the season’s antagonist Oliver Saxon in his jail cell with a pen. This took place after Saxon shot and put his sister Debra Morgan in a vegetative state. Given the intense and personal circumstances, all of them agreed that the killing was self-defense and Batista gave Dexter the benefit of the doubt. It will be exciting to see if Batista makes any future appearances on the season, which Zayas kept silent about, and if he will collide with Dexter along the way and get a different kind of closure.

There is definitely a window for Batista to cross paths with Dexter, especially now that Angela has found out his true identity. This whole time, Batista, like everyone else back in Miami, presumed Dexter was dead so it will be interesting to see how he will react if he finds out that not only is Dexter alive and living under an alias, but also that he was the Bay Harbor Butcher and responsible for many of the crimes left unsolved back during his time in Miami. Time will tell if the characters will reunite and what will ultimately happen with Dexter as his dark secrets begin to unfold as Dexter: New Blood has now reached its halfway mark into the season.
