New God of War Comic Teases The Egyptian Gods

Warning! Spoilers for God of War: Fallen God #1 ahead

After many months of delays, the first issue of God of War: Fallen God is finally available, and it has the potential to shake up the franchise in a big way. While issue #1 largely focusses on Kratos’s inner turmoil, a small detail hints that this series may officially introduce the Egyptian gods to the God of War universe.

Written by Chris Roberson, God of War: Fallen God is a new series from Dark Horse Comics that will reportedly bridge the gap between God of War III and 2018’s God of War on PS4. Since the latest installment brought Kratos from the realm of the Greek gods into the world of Norse mythology, fans have been left to speculate as to how that came about, but the setting isn’t the only thing that changed in the new game. Kratos himself seems to be a different man, having finally learned to control his rage. Fallen God is expected to detail both the physical and spiritual journey Kratos endured in getting to the Norse realm, but before any of that, the Ghost of Sparta first makes a quick stop in Egypt.

God of War: Fallen God #1 opens after the events of God of War III, with Kratos trying to rid himself of the Blades of Chaos – the weapons he used throughout the first three games. At this point, the blades only serve as a cursed reminder of Kratos’s pact with Ares, so it’s only natural he should want to abandon them. However, no matter how far he travels, the blades reappear before Kratos whenever he dozes off, preventing him from truly leaving his past behind. Eventually, Kratos’s desperate attempts to outrun his demons bring him to the desert land of Egypt. All the people there seem to fear him, save for one old man, who tells Kratos that “destiny lies in store for you here in the land of the pharaohs.” The man also directly addresses Kratos as the Ghost of Sparta, implying that the tales of his brutality have spread much further than he initially thought.

True to his character, Kratos disregards the old man’s prophecy and continues on his way, but if the issue has taught us anything, it’s that destiny will find Kratos no matter how far he runs. Now, it seems, that destiny includes the Egyptian gods. Interestingly, 2018’s God of War was almost set in Egypt. While the developers obviously wound up choosing Norway instead, there is an easter egg in the game where Kratos and Atreus encounter runes that reference the mythologies of other ancient cultures, Egypt being one of them. Considering both the Greek and Norse gods already exist in the God of War franchise, it stands to reason that the Egyptian gods would as well, and Fallen God may finally introduce them in the flesh.

It’s unclear how big a role the Egyptian gods will play in the Fallen God series, if any. However, the old man’s cryptic message implies Kratos will spend more time in the land of the pharaohs before traveling to Norway. What exactly he will do with that time remains to be seen.
