New Manga Combines Soul Eater with Dragon Ball Super

Fighting abilities that manifest in strange ways in a new manga Battle of the Six Realms feel akin to what Demon Weapons can achieve in Soul Eater while the relationship between two of its characters is reminiscent of how two warriors interact in Dragon Ball Super.

Written by Serina Oda, the manga Battle of the Six Realms introduces a world largely driven by the eponymous high-revenue-generating tournament that has a very particular prerequisite: Contenders must undergo a “body modification surgery.” Those who have had the surgery can unlock a special ability that contorts their bodies in obscene ways. For example, there is a character whose limbs transform into praying mantis appendages, but rather than having front legs, the claw-like feet are sickles.

This manifestation is similar to the transformations of Soul Eater‘s Demon Weapons – humans who can turn into traditional weapons. Even though these characters can transform into a full-body weapon, their ability to take the partial form of one where only an arm, for example, turns into a scythe is the closest comparison to fighters who have been surgically altered in Battle of the Six Realms.

However, it should be noted that in Battle of the Six Realms, humans must undergo surgery to unlock their abilities while Demon Weapons in Soul Eater obtain their power if they possess the weapon gene. This is why when a character from the Battle of the Six Realms transforms even though he didn’t have surgery, the villain expresses shock (and dismay). As a side note, the origin of the Demon Weapon ability derives from an experiment that is more like the surgery from the Battle of the Six Realms as it involved a heretic murdering a witch and joining her soul with an inanimate object.

Meanwhile, the relationship that the Battle of the Six Realms‘ protagonist, En, forms with a powerful competitor shares many similarities with the interactions between Vegeta and Cabba during Dragon Ball Super‘s Tournament of Power. In Battle of the Six Realms, a mysterious character who competes in the massive eponymous tournament is intrigued by En because of the power he can sense within him. Even though helping En could hurt his chances of winning the tournament, the mysterious contender encourages En to participate.

In Dragon Ball Super, warriors from eight universes are forced to compete in a tournament where the losers are erased from existence. One of the battles includes a fight between the Saiyan Prince Vegeta from Universe Seven and the Saiyan Cabba from Universe Six. Even though losing is a step towards the loser’s universe getting erased, Vegeta feels compelled to help his opponent by threatening to destroy his homeworld and family should Cabba fail to transform. The threat is quite effective as it results in the younger Saiyan transforming numerous times, and Vegeta almost loses because of it.

Like Soul Eater, humans in Battle of the Six Realms can transform a portion of their body into some sort of weapon, but while Soul Eater‘s Demon Weapons can achieve this ability with a special gene, humans in Battle of the Six Realms must undergo a specialized surgery. Meanwhile, a relationship between tournament competitors in the same manga whose interactions have the potential of hurting each other’s abilities to become the champion is very similar to how Vegeta helps Cabba fight in the Tournament of Power even though it could result in him getting erased from existence.
