New World Announces Wheel of Time Skins Including Weapons & Cloaks

This holiday season players of the MMORPG New World can receive the gift of Wheel of Time skins, including weapons and cloaks based on the hit show. Both fantasy intellectual properties are owned by parent company Amazon, with New World coming from Amazon Games, and both debuted within the latter half of 2021 with varying degrees of success.

Wheel of Time is one of the most successful pieces of content Prime Video has ever produced, and has already earned a second season before the first has finished airing. On the flip side, Amazon Game Studios’ New World has had a comparatively rockier beginning. Despite a strong start with high player numbers following its launch, there has been a significant decline in the active player base’s numbers, with many users feeling unheard when it comes to feedback, gameplay, and features. Lots of players that are sticking around have voiced complaints about New World‘s late-game difficulty spike.

Starting on December 24, fans of the MMORPG can watch special New World Twitch streams to unlock new in-game rewards such as weapon skins, apparel, and more. The included items already announced are Tam’s Blade, Shadowspawn Blade, Red Ajah Cloak, Children of the Light, Egwene’s Cloak, Nynaeve’s Coat, and the Ouroboros Crest. The season one finale of Wheel of Time is set to debut on December 24, kicking off the New World crossover which in turn will run until January 11, 2022.

Amazon appears to be attempting to use the popularity of Wheel of Time to boost the player base for the MMORPG and it’s very possible the collaboration between the two IPs could be a success for the game. Just a few weeks after its launch, New World lost around 600,000 players from its peak count, marking about two-thirds of the entire community at the time. The game’s current player peak count fluctuates somewhere between 300,000 and 400,000, something that could be bolstered by the new addition of content.

New World is one of the more ambitious titles Amazon Games has made to date, and it still seems the studio is trying to find its footing. Prime Video, meanwhile, has established itself as one of the top contenders for streaming content, particularly when it comes to the fantasy genre, and it makes sense that Amazon would look in-house to support properties that are arguably struggling. There are many popular fantasy-based MMORPGs on the market, meaning New World has many competitors and competition to overcome in order to acquire a stable player base. If New World‘s crossover with Wheel of Time is a success for the MMORPG, it will be interesting to see if this intracompany crossover trend continues going forward, especially with Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series on the horizon.

New World is currently available on PC.
