New World: Best Gear to Keep (& Best to Salvage)

Players have multiple options to handle gear they pick up throughout New World. Gear can be salvaged for repair parts, sold at trading posts for gold, or equipped if it is good enough and works with a player’s build. While it would be nice if every piece of gear acquired was good enough to keep, that is, unfortunately, not the case, especially with New World’s limited inventory space.

Luckily, repair parts and gold are both extremely important in New World as well. Repair parts can be used to keep quality equipment in good shape, and gold can obviously be used for a great number of things, like buying new gear, upgrades, and anything else players need. As a result, all gear is valuable, even that which isn’t good enough to use.

Players may find themselves wondering what gear is good enough to keep, and what should be done with the rest. Making the right decisions about handling excess gear can go a long way in keeping a player well-equipped, repaired, and flush with gold.

Best Gear to Keep in New World

Before deciding what to do with New World gear that won’t be kept, it is important to decide what will. There are a few different ways to decide what equipment to hold on to, based on some helpful criteria:

  • If the stats work better for a player’s New World build
  • If the stats work well for an alternative build the player might want to try
  • If one of the player’s New World faction members wants the gear, and it isn’t bound to the player character.

If the gear doesn’t meet these requirements, then it should be sold or salvaged. Deciding on what to do here is even easier.

If the gear is bound to the player character but isn’t worth keeping, then it must be salvaged. If it isn’t player-bound, then it can be sold at a trading post for gold. Usually, if a player can get gold out of some gear, that is better than salvaging, but if the market price for that piece of gear is too low, then the repair parts may be more useful. This is up to the player in the given situation since it also depends on the value of what the parts will be repairing. Largely, though, unbound gear should be sold at the trading post if players want to get the most out of it.

If players aren’t yet sure what to do with specific gear, they can always store it at various settlements. They will need to be aware of how much they are storing, however, as space is usually limited, even with bonuses from Territory Standing Points.
