New World Gold, Item Dupe Exploiters Banned By Amazon

Amazon has begun banning those who exploit item and gold duplication tricks in New World. While the company did recently clarify that it will allow minimap mods in New World, when it comes to direct cheating, the company is cracking down.

New World launched in September and immediately saw pretty high numbers in terms of player count, but those numbers have dipped over time as players find issues with the game. In the beginning, it was server issues, preventing some players from getting into the game at all. While that has smoothed out a bit as Amazon has continued to work on the game—and players leaving does make more space for others—numerous other concerns have come to the fore since. New World has many bugs, some bigger than others, and players have voiced their frustrations about how these bugs hinder the experience of the game. It doesn’t help, either, that some players will exploit glitches to gain unfair advantages over those playing by the rules.

Amazon isn’t letting this slide, though, according to an update from the game’s community manager on the New World website. This post details the bans that the developers have levied against those who duplicate items and gold. It explains that players have used packet manipulation to duplicate in-game gold and resources, as well as mess with housing, and that the dev team has collectively banned over 1,200 players who’ve been found guilty of this. These banned players have had their items removed and their trade listings canceled along with the ban. According to the post, an initial sweep of bans on November 2nd “eliminated over 80% of duped Coin and item value from the economy.” Maybe this will help lure back players who’ve abandoned New World since launch.

The post went on to address those duped items that may remain, and issued an apology to any players whose in-game experience may have been impacted by the exploits’ negative effects on the economy. The community manager stated that as of November 15th an additional 460 players have been banned, bringing the total percentage of duplicated items removed from the game up to 98. Acknowledging the fact that some duped items remain, the post explains that those items are a result of those who happened upon the duplication glitch but didn’t actually exploit it. Those players won’t be punished for an honest mistake. That said, players have a habit of rediscovering duplication glitches in New World, so this may not be the last time this issue comes up.

After the failure of its previous game, Crucible, Amazon was looking to make a splash with New World. Thus far it has done well, though exploits and bugs have hampered what might otherwise have been a great new MMO experience. If Amazon can continue to improve the game, it may have a long-term hit on its hands. If the duplicators keep on exploiting the game, though, New World may be in trouble.

New World is available to play now on PC.
