Original Captain Marvel’s Son is Back and Getting His Own Comic Series

In a surprise announcement by Marvel Comics, the son of the original Captain Marvel will be getting a brand new series. Genis-Vell, the son of the original Captain Marvel Mar-Vell, has long been a fan-favorite character. With his recent reemergence, there’s never been a better time for Marvel to further explore Genis-Vell by giving him his own limited series.

Now, Marvel has announced that they are once again giving Genis his own limited series set to launch in June. Coming from David himself as well as artist Juanan Ramírez the five-issue series promises to be a true space epic. Details are limited but include Genis reuniting with Rick Jones to investigate a mystery involving the literal personification of Death. Rick’s ex-wife Marlo will also be returning. David has noted surprise at the opportunity to write the character again following his death decades ago but notes that it is “great to be back.” alongside the announcements, Marvel also revealed the first issue’s cover by Mike McKone, and three variant covers by Dan Jurgens, Peach Momoko, and Juni Ba.

In the past few years Marvel has made a concerted effort to give the spotlight to heroes other than their A-listers with limited series. Juggernaut got his own spinoff series from Fabian Nicieza and Ron Garney in 2020 while Beta Rey Bill got one from Daniel Warren Johnson in 2021. While a creative darling, the original Genis-Vell era of Captain Marvel was never a sales juggernaut and was canceled twice. Nonetheless, Genis-Vell has a small but devoted fanbase, meaning a limited series like this only makes sense.

Thanks to the shaky grasp death holds in comics, Genis-Vell has returned to the living after over a decade. He has remained a part of the fight against Vox Supreme alongside the current Captain Marvel in “The Last of the Marvels” since his return in Captain Marvel #35. Time will tell if this is the beginning of a renewed prominence for the character when Genis-Vell: Captain Marvel debuts this summer.
