Original Harry Potter Director Wants To Make Cursed Child Movie

Chris Columbus, the director behind the first two Harry Potter movies, admits he would like to direct an adaptation of The Cursed Child. This November marks the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (aka The Philosopher’s Stone), the movie that kicked off the blockbuster franchise with a trio of then-unknown actors and plenty of British heavyweights. Grossing an impressive $974 million worldwide in its original run, the first Harry Potter introduced audiences to Daniel Radcliffe’s boy wizard and proved to the world that children’s books could be just as magical onscreen as they are on the page.

Flash forward to today, and while the main Harry Potter franchise has long ago come to an end, the Wizarding World remains a big part of pop culture. Warner Bros. is still churning out movies for its Fantastic Beasts prequel series, and HBO Max reportedly is in development on a Harry Potter show. For many, though, it seems likely that the future of the property lies in the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. It first opened in London’s West End in 2016 before transferring to Broadway and other international locations. Though not written by J.K. Rowling, it is based on a story devised by her and playwright Jack Thorne, as well as director John Tiffany.

It’s not a guarantee that The Cursed Child will ever become a movie, but if it does, Columbus would like to be considered for the job. Speaking to Variety as part of a special interview for the 20th anniversary of The Sorcerer’s Stone, the director answered the question of whether he believes there will be more Harry Potter movies by revealing his interest in The Cursed Child. Columbus said:

I would love to direct “The Cursed Child.” It’s a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles. It’s a small fantasy of mine.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child picks up after the epilogue of the final book, with Harry’s middle child Albus Severus going off to Hogwarts for the first time. After being sorted into Slytherin, young Al tries to find his place in his new surroundings while being at odds with Harry, leading to a time-bending adventure across the entire Harry Potter series. The play is a bit divisive among fans, with some praising the addition to Potter canon and others taking issue with how some characters are portrayed. Nevertheless, The Cursed Child has been a hit on stage, racking up numerous awards on both sides of the pond.

Should a Cursed Child movie ever come to fruition, Columbus would certainly be a smart choice for it. His vision helped get the original Harry Potter series off the ground, and bringing him back for this next installment would be a fun case of the franchise coming full circle. It would also be interesting to see what he would do with the more advanced special effects that are available these days. Still, Warner Bros. has stayed mum on the possibility of a Cursed Child adaptation, so Columbus’ hopes might remain just that. Fans will have to wait and see that the future holds.
