Pamela Anderson Comments On Broadway Debut In ‘Chicago’ As Roxie Hart

Pamela Anderson is set to make her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart, the starring role of the hit musical Chicago. The actress, model, and 90s icon has been back in the public eye recently following the release of Hulu’s limited series Pam & Tommy, which follows the story of Anderson and her ex-husband Tommy Lee, and the traumatic legal battles that followed the thievery and leaking of the couple’s private sex tape. Anderson has been clear that she did not give her consent for Pam & Tommy to be developed, and had no creative input in the project.

Anderson has previously announced her involvement in a Netflix documentary about her life, which will uniquely represent the star’s point of view. Directed by Ryan White, the film announcement came with a hand-written note by Anderson to signal the project’s personal importance. These upcoming creative endeavors, which emphasize the actress’ agency, contrast with the often difficult trajectory of Anderson’s career in the past. After a career-defining selection as the February 1990 Playmate of the Month, Anderson’s breakthrough role was the hit series Baywatch, followed by her 1996 role in Barb Wire. While the latter was initially set to elevate Anderson’s career, it was widely met with criticism as the actress was simultaneously battling the legal and public fallout of her and Lee’s sex tape scandal. Despite this, Anderson has continued acting, starring in the Stan Lee animated series Stripperella, Home Improvement, and a Baywatch reboot.

Now, Anderson is set to take on her next role, portraying Roxie Hart in the hit musical Chicago. The show will run from April 12 to June 5 at the Ambassador Theatre. Anderson’s character, Roxie, becomes a breakout star during a highly publicized murder case. Anderson spoke to the Associated Press about the role, expressing her excitement at the chance to “see what [she is] capable of”:

“From ‘Baywatch’ to Broadway. I am inspired by the unexpected. This is it, and I will not hold back anymore. I am letting go. I am ready to see what I’m capable of. For ‘Chicago,’ I’ll be putting all my cards on the table. I am doubling down — on me.”

The original Chicago musical is set during the 1920s, following Roxie Hart as she joins a group of “murderesses” in prison after killing her ex-lover during a fight. However, Hart finds fame during her time in prison as the press fawn over her sensationalized story. A stage musical is not only new territory for Anderson on Broadway, but the casting choice is also an interesting one, given Hart is a woman catapulted to fame after a traumatic event. Chicago was also adapted for the screen in 2002, with Renée Zellweger playing the part of Hart opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma Kelly, and Richard Gere as the heroine’s attorney. Anderson will follow Broadway performances by fellow actresses who have played the iconic role, including Melanie Griffith, Brooke Shields, and Ashlee Simpson.

Much has been said about Anderson in terms of her life and career, but it is rare to hear directly from the actress and model herself. While Anderson is currently experiencing a boost in attention for reasons outside of her control and agency given the recent release of Pam & Tommy, her casting in Chicago may give the actress a unique opportunity. Roxie Hart is a character with a contentious and complicated relationship with fame, and Anderson’s comments certainly suggest that she will be drawing on her personal experience when tackling the iconic part. The actress’ casting is sure to provide a unique and exciting take on Chicago that audiences are yet to experience.
