Parks & Rec: The Three Andy Moments Chris Pratt Totally Improvised

Parks & Recreation is full of unforgettable moments and lines, and many of them weren’t part of the script, such as three of the most memorable Andy Dwyer scenes, courtesy of Chris Pratt’s improvisation skills. Created by Michael Schur and Greg Daniels, Parks & Recreation debuted on NBC in 2009 and came to an end in 2015 after seven seasons and a rocky start. Season 1 is the weakest of the bunch, but the writers found the series’ style and voice in the final episodes, and the subsequent seasons were a major improvement.

Parks & Recreation followed perky bureaucrat Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and her friends and coworkers from the Parks Department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. The cast was full of actors with stand-up experience and incredible comedic skills, which is why the writers and producers gave them space to improvise. One of the characters that won over the hearts of the audience was Andy Dwyer (Chris Pratt), who began as a guest star and was quickly promoted to series regular, and it was all due to Pratt’s charm and comedic abilities.

Although all main characters had their improvisation moments, of which some made it to the show and others are hidden gems in the gag reels, only one had improvised bits that became some of the best of the show: Andy Dwyer.

Parks & Recreation: Chris Pratt Improvised Some Of Andy’s Best Scenes

Andy Dwyer was introduced in season 1 as Ann Perkins’ (Rashida Jones) boyfriend and the one who pretty much kickstarted the series as he fell on the pit next to Ann’s house and broke both legs. Andy was lazy and dim-witted, but had a big heart and eventually matured – though not too much and still kept that innocence that sometimes falls into goofiness. Chris Pratt is very good at improvising, and he took advantage of that talent while filming Parks & Recreation, though only three fully improvised moments made it to the final cut of the show.

One of the most quoted and remembered lines of the show – and one of Michael Schur’s favorites – comes from season 3’s episode “Flu Season”. When trying to help Leslie figure out what she has, Andy types her symptoms on the computer but doesn’t do it right, and so he delivers the famous quote “I typed your symptoms into the thing up here, and it says you could have ‘network connectivity problems’”. That line was improvised by Pratt, and it was too good not to keep it. Another moment that is a full Pratt creation was Andy’s reenactment of Road House, from the episode “The Debate”. The script simply said “Pratt talks about Road House”, but he decided to do a dramatic interpretation instead (and smashing the TV wasn’t planned either).

Last but not least, in season 2’s episode “Kaboom”, Leslie opens the door to find a naked Andy, who thinks he was invited to Ann’s house because she wants to get back with him. Poehler’s reaction is 100% genuine as Pratt decided to take off his skin-colored briefs and go fully nude to get the reaction they needed. That take is the one that made it to the show, but it almost cost Pratt his role, and was reprimanded by NBC. Surely, there are more improvised scenes and lines from Chris Pratt in Parks & Recreation, but these three are the ones confirmed, and they also happen to be some of his character’s best moments.
