Peter Rabbit 3 News & Updates: Everything We Know

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway has hit theaters to a warm reception from audiences, so will Peter Rabbit 3 happen? The second installment in the rebooted animated movie universe based on Beatrix Potter’s series of children’s books performed modestly at the box office on its opening weekend and received middling reviews from critics, but holds a high audience score.

Peter Rabbit 2, directed by Will Gluck, follows the eponymous troublemaking rabbit, voiced by everywhereman James Corden, and his family of animals (including voices of Elizabeth Debicki and Margot Robbie) and humans Bea and Thomas McGregor (Rose Byrne and Domnhall Gleeson). The mixed family travels to London to discuss Bea’s book deal with a publisher, and Peter gets mixed up in some hijinks along the way.

While the movie received middling reviews – many of them calling out the increased distance from the characters’ charming source material – the story has turned up the cute and the meta elements to appeal firmly to children and family audiences. The movie’s box office receipts may not have stolen the show so far, but the first installment built a respectable income over time. If Peter Rabbit 2 can do the same, it’s not out of the question that a sequel will be greenlit down the road. Gluck has also said that he has nearly finished a script for a third installment, so there’s certainly potential for another film. Here’s what Peter Rabbit 3 could look like in terms of story, cast, and release date.

Peter Rabbit 3 Possible Story

While the creator of Peter Rabbit and his friends, Beatrix Potter, wrote a series of 23 books about the characters, the movies don’t rely so much on those original stories. They instead modernize the settings and actions of the characters, which are drawn from the books. A third movie would likely have Peter experiencing further hijinks in a modern setting. In an interview with Stefan Pape of HeyUGuys, director Will Gluck said:

“Peter Rabbit 3, I’ve almost finished writing it. The idea is bananas. It’s really hard to do a sequel and I think it’s harder to do a third one but I think we have the advantage of the meta nature of ours. So the opening scene of the third movie is absolutely crazy.”

Gluck also compared the character of Peter Rabbit in each of the two released movies and his plans for a third, saying that Peter is a teenager who is flawed, and, “If there is a third movie, he’s going to be even more flawed, because as we get older, as we all know, we get more and more flawed. We don’t go the other way.

Peter Rabbit 3 Cast

As a direct sequel to Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, it would be reasonable to assume that the studio and director would attempt to reunite the main cast for subsequent outings. There’s no confirmation of returning or new cast and characters for Peter Rabbit 3, but if the main cast were to return, that would include the voice cast of James Corden voicing Peter Rabbit, Margot Robbie as Flopsy, Elizabeth Debicki as Mopsy, Daisy Ridley as Cottontail, and the main live cast members Rose Byrne as Bea Mcgregor and Domnhall Gleeson as Thomas McGregor.

Peter Rabbit 3 Release Date

There’s no confirmation yet that Peter Rabbit 3 will go into production. If it were to be announced, the production timeframe might mirror its prequel: Peter Rabbit 2 was announced in May 2018 around two months after the first movie premiered, with an original release window of February 2020 (which was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic). If the same timeframes can be expected for a third movie, without a pandemic delay, fans might hear as soon as August 2021 about whether Peter Rabbit 3 will be made, and a release date could be pegged out for mid-2023.
