Pokémon Diamond & Pearl Nursery Guide (Location & Breeding Methods)

Breeding in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl is easier than it was in the originals because of a few changes to the nursery. The old ways of breeding Pokémon are mostly obsolete thanks to the improvements made to nurseries ever since they were released in Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver. Trainers are now able to pass down their Pokémon’s natures, IVs, moves, and abilities to offspring. Additionally, trainers can hatch eggs fast in Pokémon BDSP thanks to a few Pokémon with certain abilities.

Unless one of the Pokémon being used for breeding is a Ditto in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the offspring will always be the same species of Pokémon as the mother. When breeding with a Ditto, the egg will always be the species of the Pokémon breeding with Ditto regardless of whether that second Pokémon is male or female. Otherwise, the two Pokémon have to belong to the same egg group in order to breed.

The Pokémon nursery in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl can be found in Solaceon Town, the small town between Veilstone City and Hearthome City. To leave Pokémon with the daycare, players can speak with the NPC behind the counter inside. She’ll ask which Pokémon should be left with her, and, after a short time, the two Pokémon will have an egg. Additionally, the Egg Monitor application for the Pokétch in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl tracks Pokémon breeding processes and notifies trainers when an egg can be picked up. Players can receive this application by leaving two Pokémon with the nursery first, leaving the building, and returning inside to find the NPC sitting at the table.

Everything Passed Down Through Breeding In Pokémon BDSP

The Destiny Knot in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is an item that allows the Pokémon holding it to pass down five of its six IV stats at random to its offspring. A Destiny Knot should be given to a Ditto with high IVs so it may pass down five of them to the offspring, and the sixth IV stat will come from the other parent Pokémon.

To get the Destiny Knot, players will have to first defeat the Elite Four and receive the National Dex in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. The Destiny Knot can then be found on Route 224, which can be accessed from Victory Road by the pathway that was previously blocked by an NPC.

The Everstone is a held item that prevents the Pokémon holding it from evolving, but, like the Destiny Knot, it also has a purpose for breeding in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. The Pokémon holding the Everstone will pass down its nature to the offspring, and, in most cases, the non-Ditto partner should be the one holding the Everstone while it is in the nursery.

There are a couple of ways players can receive an Everstone. The first is a mining reward players receive in the Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Grand Underground. The second way to receive an Everstone is through trade in Snowpoint City. There is an NPC who wants to trade her Haunter for a Medicham, and, when she trades the Haunter, it’s holding an Everstone, which prevents it from evolving into Gengar.

In addition to IVs and nature, parent Pokémon can also pass down some of their moves to their offspring. These are known as Egg Moves, and they’re considered moves that a Pokémon can only learn from a parent Pokémon who knows this move at the time they were bred. For example, an Absol cannot learn Mean Look in Pokémon BDSP by leveling up, from a Move Tutor, or from a TM. Instead, players would need to breed a female Absol with a male Umbreon that knows Mean Look in order to get the move passed down to the offspring. Umbreon naturally learns Mean Look at level 50 and can pass that move down to any Pokémon that it can breed with that can also learn the move.

Like Egg Moves, a Pokémon’s ability can also be passed down from parent to offspring, though there isn’t a guaranteed method to do so. Female Pokémon have a 60% chance to pass down their ability to the offspring, which is a little higher than what males have. Female Pokémon can also pass down Hidden Abilities to their offspring as well for the same chance.

The Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Ability Patch is an item that was not in the original games and allows trainers to change their Pokémon’s ability to its Hidden Ability. Trainers who want their Pokémon’s offspring to have a Hidden Ability should use an Ability Patch on a female Pokémon, and, ideally, breed it with a Ditto.

All Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Egg Groups

Since Ditto can only be found in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl after trainers defeat the Elite Four and receive the National Dex, they will have to find two Pokémon within the same egg group in order to breed them before that point. There are 15 different egg groups in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and every Pokémon belongs to at least one of them. In fact, almost every group is comprised of Pokémon that belong in more than one egg group. Additionally, any egg from a breedable group can be hatched more quickly if a Pokémon with the Flame Body ability is part of the party when traveling with one or more eggs.

The 15 different Pokémon egg groups are:

  • Monster Group: Pokémon that typically resemble dinosaurs or fictional creatures that could stand on two legs by balancing their tail
  • Water 1 Group: Pokémon that typically are semi-aquatic or amphibious
  • Water 2 Group: Pokémon that resemble fish
  • Water 3 Group: Pokémon that represent aquatic or semi-aquatic invertebrates
  • Bug Group: Pokémon that resemble insects, arachnids, and other bug-like appearances
  • Flying Group: Pokémon that typically have an avian appearance
  • Field Group: The largest breeding group made of Pokémon that are terrestrial and have mammal-like appearances
  • Fairy Group: Pokémon that are considered petite or dainty
  • Grass Group: Pokémon that have a plant-like appearance
  • Human-Like Group: Pokémon that are fully bipedal or have a human-like shape to them
  • Mineral Group: Pokémon that represent inorganic substances
  • Ditto Group: An egg group that only contains Ditto in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
  • Amorphous Group: Pokémon that have an undefined form, typically made of ghosts
  • Dragon Group: Pokémon that have a dragon-like appearance, including lizards, serpents, and dinosaurs
  • Undiscovered Group: Pokémon that are unable to breed, such as Legendaries, most Mythic Pokémon, babies, some special event Pikachus, Nidorina, and Nidoqueen
