Pokémon Fanart Combines Alakazam With Doctor Strange

A Pokémon fan has reimagined Alakazam as the MCU version of Doctor Strange with impressive fanart – a comparison that’s surprisingly fitting for the wizened Psychic-type. Nintendo’s long-running, monster-collecting JRPG series has seen plenty of fan-made crossovers throughout the years, with players envisioning Metroid bosses as evolutionary stages and trying to figure out which Pokémon the cast of Harry Potter would have on their teams. This rings true for the equally-successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, as shown by existing fan mashups having mixed Pokémon with WandaVision.

Alakazam has been a part of the Pokémon franchise from the very beginning, having been introduced within the original Generation One from Pokémon Red and Blue on the Nintendo Game Boy back in 1998. Alakazam is well-known for its powerful Psychic attacks and teleportation abilities, making it a fan-favorite pocket monster for many. As the final stage of Abra’s evolutionary line, players can get Alakazam after trading a Kadabra – though the official Pokémon Trading Card game has often skipped this secondary step due to a long-standing controversy with famed illusionist Uri Geller that led to a lengthy ban on using Kadabra in the Pokémon TCG.

Reddit user jaibrooklyn’s impressive fanart of Alakazam dressed as the MCU version of Doctor Strange has impressed the Pokémon subreddit with its clever hybrid of the two characters. The fan image depicts Alakazam emerging from one of Strange’s signature portals, hovering in midair and preparing to cast a spell on a rival Pokémon. jaibrooklyn has asked other fans which kind of Marvel/Pokémon mashup they would like to see next, with some of the top suggestions including Machamp as Hulk, Caterpie as Spider-Man, and even the shape-shifting Ditto as Loki. jaibrooklyn has noted that they have been considering putting either Mewtwo or Gensect as Iron Man and mused about casting Scizor as Deadpool.

Dr. Strange is a fitting choice to pair with a powerful Psychic-type Pokémon like Alakazam. While the mind-altering abilities of the Pokémon type aren’t considered true magic like the kind Strange regularly employs in the MCU, they are quite similar in how they use illusions and telekinesis-like attacks to fend off enemies. In fact, Abra’s evolutionary line was named after the famous magicians that served as an inspiration for Doctor Strange – with Alakazam in particular referencing the catchphrase of the great Harry Houdini. The Sorcerer Supreme is enjoying a new wave of popularity among MCU fans thanks to Benedict Cumberbatch’s appearance in the recent Spider-Man: No Way Home, and his starring role in the upcoming Dr. Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.

Fans of Pokémon have been imagining crossovers with other properties for as long as the franchise has existed. The series is home to over 900 different breeds, ensuring that there will be at least one Pokémon that matches a different character’s powers and personality. For Doctor Strange, this appears to be Alakazam, as shown in jaibrooklyn’s impressive fanart of the Psychic Pokémon as the Sorcerer Supreme.
