Pokémon GO’s Buddy System Explained

Pokémon GO is a worldwide phenomenon that has attracted hopeful Pokémon Masters who are new to the franchise and longtime faithfuls. Pokémon GO is a unique game that encourages real-life exploration through the player’s interaction with their geographical location to find Pokémon, visit PokéStops, and battle in Gyms. Since its release in 2016, this mobile game has kept players engaged with its prioritization of community events and augmented reality features, both of which allow friendships to grow with other Pokémon GO players and Pokémon themselves.

Pokémon GO introduced the first version of the “buddy system” in September 2016. The buddy system helped players find candies to give to their selected buddy Pokémon, which are necessary for it to evolve. Prior to this system, players would have to track down and re-catch a Pokémon of the same species to gather candies.

Although it increased the rates of evolution, Pokémon GO’s buddy system did not contribute greatly to the overall experience of the game. On December 18, 2019, however, the buddy system evolved to include the much more complex Buddy Adventure. Pokémon GO’s current buddy system adds Pokémon companionship, more content, and special advantages that contribute new elements to an already exciting game.

How Pokémon GO’s Buddy System Makes The Game Great

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Pokémon games is the ability to befriend various Pokémon. Pokémon GO’s buddy system has a variety of ways to interact with Pokémon: walk with them, give them special treats, play with them, battle with them, take a snapshot of them, and visit new locations with them. These interactions reward the player with Affection Hearts for their buddy in Pokémon GO that level up the relationship with the Pokémon from a Good Buddy to a Great Buddy, Ultra Buddy, and eventually a Best Buddy.

In addition to facilitating a growing relationship with Pokémon, the buddy system also adds much more content to Pokémon GO. Reaching the Best Buddy level requires a daily commitment of interacting with the Pokémon to collect Affection Hearts. Bonus Hearts can be awarded if the buddy Pokémon is in an excited state. The Pokémon can become excited through consistent interaction or by being fed a Poffin. These bonus Hearts are helpful in collecting the 300 Affection Hearts needed to level the Pokémon to a Best Buddy. The leveling system creates goals to work toward while also giving rewards along the way – in addition to the candies players receive.

After reaching the Good Buddy level with a Pokémon, it will appear on-screen walking with the player’s avatar and have a readable mood. Once Great Buddies, Pokémon will find presents for the player and learn Catch Assist, which helps to catch wild Pokémon. Ultra Buddy Pokémon will help find locations and souvenir collectibles. Best Buddy Pokémon get significant stat increases through Combat Point (CP) boosts, which makes them stronger in battle.

Additionally, the Pokémon will wear a Best Buddy Ribbon to show competition they are fully devoted to their Trainer. Pokémon GO’s buddy system adds many elements to the game that are appealing to a variety of players through Pokémon companionship, more content, and special advantages. Pokémon GO fans worldwide will have the opportunity to level up their buddy Pokémon during Pokémon GO Fest 2021 on July 17 and 18.
